Norelco 1090X,
By RK (Flint, MI) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Norelco 1090X SHAVER CORD/CORDLESS JET (Health and Beauty)
This is an outstanding product. My original Norelco razor broke after many years of usage and required me to replace. I originally purchased the Braun Pulsonic Series 7 razor. While the Braun provided a very close shave and ultimate smoothness, often times it would cut me and was very difficult to get the hairs on my neck, especially around my adam's apple. Switching back to the Norelco 1090X provided a much quicker shave with no irritation occuring. I also have no problem getting those problem hairs on my neck. Having no loyalty to either company and trying both razors, I can easily say that the Norelco ranks #1 overall...

This review is from: Norelco 1090X SHAVER CORD/CORDLESS JET (Health and Beauty)
Have used Norelco shavers for 30+years. This unit is by far the very best!. It is closer, more versatile, and sleeker than any product on the market, I love it!!!!!

When the fix-it parts for the older quieter Norelco model arrive it will once again become the standard. This space-age looking 1090x just does not cut it (sic). And the trimmer is useless.

Poor build quality and bad shave,
By Chris Hooper (Fremont, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Norelco 1090X SHAVER CORD/CORDLESS JET (Health and Beauty)
I've owned 4 or 5 shavers in the last 20 years; the most recent
being the Norelco Arcitec 1090X which I received as a birthday gift from my wife. She bought me a different cheapo shaver at Christmas. (I think it might have been the Norelco 7110X, but I don't recall for sure. What I do recall is that the on/off button on that one was crap, it gave a weak shave, and the battery needed a recharge after only two uses -- it was quickly returned) Anyway, as a long time (very satisfied) user of Norelco shavers, I was thrilled to try out the Arcitec. I was a bit dismayed that I had to charge it before first use. My old Norelco allowed me to plug the shaver in to use even if the battery was dead. The case and charging stand are both oddball. They are cumbersome and take up a lot of space, where only a cord was necessary in the past. I liked how well the shaver hugged my face, but was completely turned off by the number of passes I needed for a shave. The rotary speed of this shaver is slightly lower than my old shaver, so that might account for some of this, but I would expect the sharpness of the brand new blades on this shaver to beat the six year old replacement blades on my old shaver. Didn't happen. In fact, after shaving with this shaver daily for two weeks straight, I noticed several rather long hairs on my upper neck that the shaver wasn't even picking up. It seems once the hair got to a certain length, the shaver wouldn't even touch them at all. Totally unimpressive. A single shave with my old shaver cleaned everything up quickly. Another reviewer pointed out the shaving heads have to be individually opened for cleaning. This is a pain compared to the previous generation where all three heads quickly pull off together, and you can tap the top with the bottom to easily empty it. Any kind of tapping causes the shaving head covers to close, since they are on a hinge. This combined with the weak shaving ability is poor design. Worse, several times when shaving, the module containing the shaving heads started to make a loud noise, like a gear making poor contact. Usually pushing down on the head module would make the noise go away. A couple times the head module popped off while shaving. With that kind of noise, I felt like the shaver wasn't going to last any more than a couple months. This gave me the impression of pretty poor build quality. My wife returned the shaver yesterday. I'm going to buy new heads again (and maybe a new battery if I can find one) for my old Norelco shaver which is about ten years old. I'm very depressed about what has happened to the Norelco brand. Somehow I think this is Philips fault. I might be willing to try them again in a couple years, but you can bet I'll again buy at a place where I know I can return it.

I've been using Norelco shavers for decades, and generally buy their best when my old shaver dies. I'd read the mediocre reviews of this latest model, but needed a new shaver, so went ahead and bought it.
First off, it's a good shaver. It shaves closely, and is no noisier than my old Norelco. The sideburn trimmer is too short to use with the shaver head attached (it gets in the way and blocks the view of your face), but fortunately the shaver head pulls straight off the top, so that becomes a non-issue unless you're not willing to remove the shaving head to use the trimmer. The unit is very light, so it doesn't have the heft of my old Norelco, which may contribute to some saying they feel the unit is cheaply made. That's not my impression, however. It's a beautiful unit with carbon fiber trim on the sides. My only concern about its lightness is that it's easy to knock over if you don't press down on its suction cup feet to secure it to your countertop. And, I'd have preferred the power cord plugged into the back of the stand, rather than its side, but I can see that being a more useful placement for many people. My main complaint is that the power cord no longer plugs into the shaver. You MUST use the charging stand or travel pod to recharge it. That means when the battery fails, you must replace it. No more nursing the old shaver for a few months using it plugged in while you research new models. The good news is that it now uses a Lithium Ion battery, which contributes to its lighter weight, and there's no memory effect from recharging the battery before it's nearly discharged, so you can recharge it fully when it gets down to five minutes of charge left. If you forget, a quick three minute recharging will give you three minutes of use. You can't leave the power plugged into the charging stand once it's fully charged or you'll damage the battery (there's no electronics to reduce the charging rate to a trickle charge when it detects the battery is full). The only reason I didn't give this five stars is because of its price. Norelco charges a stiff premium for its latest display electronics, but I'm a sucker for such gadgets.

The new Norelco Arcitec razor is everything I expected from a Norelco product. They have lived up to their name in developing a new generation smoothe shaving electric razor. I bought one to leave at my condo but now I want one for my home even though my 5 year old razor works fine. I'm hoping the old one breaks but with Norelco's reeputation it will be with me for many years to come.

1090X Norelco user review,
This review is from: Norelco 1090X SHAVER CORD/CORDLESS JET (Health and Beauty)
After using this razor for 3 weeks I am very pleased with my purchase. I have used the Quadra for shaving my face and the bottom end Norelco for shaving my head. The 1090X gives me a better shave than my Quadra, but my Quadra feels smoother due to the design of the screen. The Arcitec requires a different motion than my Quadra to get it to shave right. I now get a closer shave with the Arcitec. The hair capacity leaves something to be desired. It must be emptied every shave or it will fill up midway on your second shave. A quick rinse after every shave remedies this problem. This shaver is quieter than my other Norelcos. This shaver has hidden LED lights for battery charge status and clean indicator, pretty slick. Overall I bought this razor for it's design and I am quite pleased with the shave I get. I dig the stand and carrying case.
The only thing I dislike about this particular models is the power cord. It has a gigantic plug, almost half the size of the shaver itself, granted you won't be needing this as long as you leave with a full charge at home. *This model is a 2009 limited editionl

PASS ON THIS ONE!,

This review is from: Norelco 1090X SHAVER CORD/CORDLESS JET (Health and Beauty)
This Norelco is a real disappointment! In short, it's loud and gives a lousy shave. At about 1/2" in length, the trimmer is too small to groom a sideburn in one pass. The trimmer is also situated in a way that makes it difficult to see and reach your target area. The shaver is poorly designed, cheaply built, and a disgrace to the Norelco line. The little travel shaver that comes with the Norelco kit is even worse!
