I used the same Norelco electric razor for 12 years before it finally broke down and I bought this one. I also never changed the blades on it. While this new razor cuts just fine out of the package (with new blades), it cannot possibly last as long as my previous razor and has two major flaws that serve Norelco in forcing you to buy blades and purchase a new razor sooner:

(1) This is designed so that it won't shave when plugged in. Some other reviews state that it feels as if the motor is "underpowered" and this is clearly why. With my previous Norelco, it would spin the blades faster when plugged in than when running from battery. Here, since it only runs from battery, it can't get the full force that it would sucking power directly from the outlet. Therefore, as I project, this razor will start to cut poorly when the blades begin to dull because it doesn't have the necessary power to compensate for dull blades.

(2) The instructions state that you cannot replace the battery. Maybe, in fact, you can, but Norelco certainly won't sell you a battery replacement and I'm not sure where to get a new battery or if the installation is tricky (since its designed not to have the battery replaced). On my old Norelco, the battery stopped holding a charge long before I actually stopped using it. I was able to continue using it, even with a dead battery, by plugging directly into the outlet to run it.

In sum, the combination that it does not run directly plugged into an outlet and the fact that you cannot replace the battery means that when the battery dies, you need to buy a new razor. Therefore, this will have limited life and it benefits Norelco because they figure you will buy another of their razors sooner. If I had known these facts BEFORE I bought this razor, I never would have bought it. Be sure to research this for whatever razor you are considering buying.

About 30 years ago I switched from Norelco shavers to Braun, only because the Braun would run much longer on a battery charge. I was on my way to Siberia for a diplomatic mission and I had no idea if I was going to have an electrical outlet suitable for the battery charger. My only complaint with the old Norelco shavers, is that they were a pain in the rear to clean. It seems that as I grow older (now 82) my light beard has decided to change directions to the point that the Braun did not do a very good job of shaving. I always had to do a touch up with a blade razor to finish the job. I also had to deal with ingrown hairs under my chin. After my very first shave, with the Norelco AT875, I had a baby butt smooth face that took me about one half the time to accomplish. The Norelco is very quiet, to the point where you may wonder if it is even running, but rest assured that it does a great job with very little fuss. Cleaning could not be easier. The head is hinged so when you release a little latch, the head swings open and you place it under hot running water. I had a bit of trepidation when I first did this because it does not seem right to hold an electrical device under water. However, it does a great job of cleaning the head with very little fuss. I do leave the head open until it dries out. The instructions advise not to wipe with tissue to avoid clogging the head with small tissue fibers. The bottom line is that I am very pleased with this shaver and would buy another in a heart beat. It is much lower in price, compared to a new Braun, and for me, does a much better job of shaving. So far, it has been running for several days on the first charge and they promise 50 minutes on a charge. That will take me into next month, since it now takes me far less than 5 minutes to shave.

This razor shaves better than my Braun ever did, much closer without leaving obstinate stragglers behind. Too, it's a very quiet razor. Lasts me about 4 weeks before recharging is needed, I do have a face of light whiskers, though. Heavy bearded guys may experience this razor differently.

I've seen electric razors ranging in price from $49.99 to $249.99, and essentially they all do pretty much the same thing. Up until now, I've been buying bags of those disposables, thinking I'm saving money. Well, add up all those bags over time, and you see the wrong headed thinking of that strategy.Without exaggeration, this one here shaves totally smooth in probably half the time of a blade. I don't dare use it dry...no idea why that's even an option...but I also don't use anything but water, and my face stays irritation free (no after shave). I'll not be using anything but electrics in the future. The price is great too. You don't need to spend 100-200$ more on gimmicky junk like self cleaning or super advanced technologies built into the unit (like some overpriced toothbrushes) when a rotary blade is a rotary blade, no matter what it's housed in- you can only shave SO close, whether you spend $60 or a million. Go buy this one here, and a $250 model at the same time and then compare the results. Or, better yet, do a blind test and I bet you'll not be able to tell which razor did the job; you'll literally not be able to notice ANY difference (until you get that month's cc statement, that is).
