I used a Braun Linear shaver since 1994, and was doubtful of the rotary shavers. After researching on Consumer Reports, I deceided to jump ship. The 5822XL is rated #1 on Consumer Reports, and now, I know why. There was no noticeable skin irritation; which was my concern. It gave me a closer shave than the old Braun, and in 1/2 the time! The lack of the familiar"buzzzzzzz," replaced by a barely audible "Whirrr," was refreshing. I am VERY pleased with it. This one's a keeper!

Most men try to find a happy compromise between a close shave and a comfortable shave, especially if they have a coarse, wiry beard. I fit into that category, especially on my neck under my chin. The hairs grow in every direction, and it is difficult to get a close shave there without a lot of irritation and nicks.

This Norelco provides an extremely comfortable shave, but for me, not a close shave. This makes it less desirable to me. It might make a fine choice for someone with a lighter beard, or someone with less shaving experience, or someone who has a disability that makes it difficult to shave. Men in these categories would find the Norelco's comfortable shave to be a winning factor.

I'm also not pleased with the cleaning requirements. My old Remington linear-style had a foil head that pops off, making the foil easy to clean under water, exposing the cutting head, which is also easy to rinse and brush under water. This Norelco shaving head, on the other hand, contains both the foil and the cutting blades. You must physically pop out the cutting blades to be able to access the back side of the foil for cleaning. Further, the instructions tell you to clean it in alcohol, then use a lubricating oil on the mechanism afterwards. This is considerably more work.

As I wasn't experiencing a satisfactory shave with this razor, I tried for the first time a pre-electric shave conditioner. This conditioner has definitely helped, and allowed me to give the razor a two-star rating instead of only one-star. If you aren't pleased with the quality of your electric shave, I highly recommend you try a pre-shave conditioner.

I typically shave with a razor and clean up the spots I missed with an electric. After having used the shaver lightly for only just over a year, the battery died and now its worthless. That seems pretty quick for an expensive electric razor...
