Great singing on this early recording, December 15, 2000
This review is from: Norma (Audio CD)
This early recording of Norma (1937)has some distortion on the first disc but that doesn't prevent it from being enjoyable, Gina Cigna was the dramatic soprano of her day famous particularly for her Turandot here she sings with great bravura but lacks the subtleties of the role that Callas gave with such seering intensity however her singing can be spectacular and her top notes are very exciting, next to her Giovanni Brevario as Pollione shows heroic style coupled with good technique,Stignani is particularly in good voice, she was to record Adalgisa again almost 20 years later with Callas but here she is in fresher voice, it's great to hear her in her prime and the duets with Cigna especially Mira,o Norma are the highlights of this version, for me the reason in buying this particular disc is to hear the splendid regal singing from one of the basses of the century, Tancredi Pasero, his resonant commanding voice is heard to wonderful effect in his two main arias, the best Oroveso on disc,Gui conducts with great control and style.
