Review
This video provides a valuable perspective to the evaluator, with the opportunity to view visual response patterns in non-disabled infants. The natural appeal of the infants in the tape, combined with the humanistic approaches of the professional involved, make the video appealing as well as informative. As a whole, it is appropriate as both a pre-service and in-service training tool, and the terminology is clearly explained in a manner that is understandable to parents and professionals who are programming for children whose visual behaviors may be difficult to evaluate. The emphasis is clearly on the development of vision and the achievement of responses in the expected sequence. The videotape is an attractive vehicle for demonstrating specific visual behaviors, and offers something new to even the seasoned professional. --Dr. Jane Erin, University of Texas, October 1991
Product Description
This video was part of a research project, involving the development of an assessment of eye muscle control. It was exciting to watch these babies develop increasing skill in using their eyes, until six months of age when their eye movements are as competent as adults! Five infants illustrate a comprehensive range of eye movements from the newborn stage to 6 months of age. These visual behaviors are grouped into developmental sequences, which can be used as a guide to plan visual stimulation programs incorporated into play for children of all ages who may not use their eyes efficiently. Major topics include: reflexive patterns (pupillary reactions, doll's eye responses, and eyelid reflexes), and voluntary movements of localization (visual approach), fixation (visual grasp), ocular pursuit (visual manipulation), and gaze shift (visual release). Enclosed CD includes viewing guide and script for translation into other languages or hearing impaired. Also available in DVD format.
