Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Ever wonder how your pet sees the world? Norman is the true story of an exceptional dog and his 17 year life as an important member of a human family, told in his own voice from his adoption to his final trip to the vet. Many of his adventures and misadventures are captured in photographs that are as amusing as he was charming. Through his eyes, you will meet his adoptive parents, see his human siblings grow to adults, laugh at his pranks, cry at his tragedies, admire his courage and come to love him as his family did.

With wit, affection and insight, Norman relates his encounters with friend and foe, his discovery of his two great passions, his disappointment at being neutered, his annoyance at the tricks played on him, his fierce defense of his turf, and finally, growing old with his parents. Norman's stories cover a lot of territory as they follow his master's career moves from Illinois to Massachusetts to New Hampshire and finally, to Pennsylvania with marathon vacation drives to Nevada, Canada and Florida. These trips set the stage for many of Norman's and the family's travails.

Much more than just a pet story, Norman is an endearing family memoir that will move and entertain you as it clearly did its ghost author. George McGee has convincingly captured the character and voice of his beloved canine companion (with an honesty that is not always flattering to himself or Norman) such that the reader quickly forgets the human mind that is really telling the story. While certainly an appealing book for children, it is not written down to a child's level. It is a great story for pet lovers of any age.

From the Author

You really don't know when you write that first book if anybody is going to be interested in what you have to say. Norman's story has been published for four months now and the feedback from dozens of readers has been most gratifying - particularly the several people who were greiving recently lost pets and found his story to be very theraputic.

5.0 out of 5 stars We dogs are people too, April 5, 2007

My human read this book to me and I can't recommend it enough. Finally a book that tells what it's like to see the world from a foot off the ground. There are many moving momments in this book (bowls included) about our relationships with the humans who we protect. Norman does a fantastic job of showing how we four leggeds give meaning to the mundane lives of humans. While I sometimes object to being called a dog, Mr. McGee helps Norman express the more human side of being a dog. As readers we get an inside look at the very important role of canines in a modern post indutrial world.

5.0 out of 5 stars a pet lover's book, March 27, 2007
This review is from: Norman: A Dog's Life (Paperback)
I read this book to my daughters (ages 6 and 8) over the past few evenings. With so many of the books I read to them today there's little to keep me from yawning at each turn of the page. Norman: A Dog's Life was different though. Rather than read the obligatory one chapter a night, it was easy to fulfill their requests for more. They loved hearing about Norman's adventures and compared stories about our own pets quirky personalities. And even went looking for glasses for our own dog to wear. We ended the book while reading outdoors around our chimania on a beautiful early spring evening. I had trouble getting through the last chapter and my wife took over. The girls, though sad, understood about the eventuality of life's cycle and consoled me with the fact that it was ok, our dog (8 years old) is still a puppy. I hope you enjoy this book as much as our whole family did.

A must have book for all dog lovers. I just couldn't put it down until I had read the whole book. You'll laugh a lot and I even shed a tear.
