Editorial Reviews

Norman Granz is one of the most important non-musicians in the history of jazz and no one has made a greater contribution to the staging, recording and filming of jazz concerts. This series of performances from the prestigious Montreux Jazz FestivalTM now makes a part of this legacy available on dvd for the first time. Ray Bryant brought to modern jazz not only the deep roots of the blues but also the sounds and passion of gospel. This 1977 solo concert captures him at his very best and features classics such as Take The "A" Train, Django and St Louis Blues.Take the "A" train
Georgia on my mind
Jungle Town Jubilee
If I can just make it
into heaven
Django
Blues No. 6
Satin doll
Sometimes I feel like a
motherless child
ST. Louis Blues

they used to be

5.0 out of 5 stars Solo Piano at its best, May 26, 2007
By
This review is from: Norman Granz Jazz In Montreux Presents Ray Bryant '77 (DVD)
Ray Bryant is a Jazz pianist heavily influenced by Blues and Gospel so this solo concert from 1977 is a chance to hear him demonstrate this.

At this concert he plays:

Take The 'A' Train

Georgia On My Mind

Jungle Town Jubilee

If I Can Just Make It Into Heaven

Django

Blues No. 6

Satin Doll

Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child

St. Louis Blues

Things Ain't What They Used To Be

The concert starts with a mainly Boogie Woogie reading of Take the A Train. Bryant manages to incorporate a few other styles briefly, bits of stride and gospel fit in nicely to this exciting performance. A lovely reading of Georgia follows which shows the mellower laid back side of Bryant's playing.

In truth he's capable of playing most styles and perhaps demonstrates this to best effect on a great version of Satin Doll. Anybody interested in Jazz Piano will enjoy this DVD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Top Notch Variations on Jazz Standards..., July 17, 2008
By
This review is from: Norman Granz Jazz In Montreux Presents Ray Bryant '77 (DVD)
Great product...love the fact that this concert was preserved for the edification of those of us who are Jazz Music lovers!

If you like all different styles of of Jazz Variations, from Boogie Woogie, Modern, Bop and even some fleeting touches of modal Jazz, then you will love this concert.

Its a great video and even though you can date the concert by the apparel of the participants and the concert goers...the music is timeless and well worth the appreciation.
