With the backing of Oscar Peterson how can one go wrong?
This is a disc that one must have if you like swing music.
Oscar in '77 was at the hight of his creative powers and Eldridge, well .... is as always, Eldridge.
There is nothing more to say than buy the dvd.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hot festival performance, June 3, 2008
This review is from: Norman Granz Jazz In Montreux Presents Roy Eldridge '77 (DVD)
Eldridge does it again;
admittedly, in 1977 he was no longer quite at the top of the game, but Roy at 80% of power is still a magnificent player...

He plays with verve and zest many a younger player might envy and, with Oscar Peterson(p), Niels Pedersen (European answer to Ray Brown-b) and Bobby Durham (dm), this DVD really contains some hot music. As the concert reaches its end the things really start cooking and the bis (Bye Bye Blackbird) reaffirms the greatness of the ensemble on the stage and the magnificence of the Little Jazz, Roy Eldridge, one of my favorite musicians.

5.0 out of 5 stars More brilliance, April 21, 2007

What can I say about this DVD that I haven't already said about the rest of this series. Well if nothing else it is one of the very very best. To get Roy Eldridge (AKA 'Little Jazz') on film in colour with a trio is just amazing.

Roy Eldridge was one of the most exciting Trumpeters in Jazz history sitting somewhere in the gap between Louis Armstrong and Dizzy Gillespie. A fiery competitive player who always went for the high notes and tried to play anybody else off the stage. Put him with the trio here, which consists of Bobby Durham, Neils Henning Orsted Pederson and Oscar Peterson and you immediately know this is going to be great.

From the opening notes of 'Between the Devil and the deep Blue Sea' you'll be in love with this. Following this is 'Blues' in which Eldridge goes for it big time on his solo. Of course Peterson in the 70's was in prime form and was never one to shy away from a challenge and he replies with an equally exciting solo.

Other highlights are Eldridges wonderful reading of 'I Surrender Dear' and Petersons magnificent solo on 'Perdido'.

The other tunes played are:
Dale's Wail
Bye Bye Blackbird

Careful watching and listening will show you that these guys actually weren't that well rehearsed as there are few little mistakes here and there, but it doesn't matter a jot, when these guys are swinging this is simply one of the best music DVD's I've ever bought.
