5.0 out of 5 stars The Greats, March 7, 2007

This review is from: Norman Granz Jazz in Montreux Presents Jazz at the Philharmonic '75 (DVD)
A chance to see this 1975 JATP concert should not be turned down.

The numbers played are:

For You

Autumn Leaves

Sunday

If I Had You

I Never You

The line-up of the band is:

Bobby Durham - Drums

Keeter Betts - Bass

Joe Pass - Guitar

Tommy Flanagan - Piano

Clark Terry - Trumpet/Flugelhorn

Roy Eldridge - Trumpet

Benny Carter - Alto Sax

Zoot Sims - Tenor Sax

With a line-up like that you know its going to be good - and it is.

All the musicians are on top-form: Clark Terry is immaculate and inventive, Roy Eldridge fiery and competitive, quite simply its a chance to see some of the all-time Jazz greats in colour, on film, with decent sound. Buy now you won't regret it!

5.0 out of 5 stars HOT mainstream jazz, June 16, 2010
This review is from: Norman Granz Jazz in Montreux Presents Jazz at the Philharmonic '75 (DVD)
This MAGNIFICENT recreation of JATP spirit has the players in a very good form

(including Roy Eldridge, who could sometimes be less than impressive in the 1970s). If you've ever wandered what's mainstream jazz - here it is! With be-boppish slippery phrases freely mixed

with typical swing forms and procedures, with plenty of spirit drive and wit, I can hardly choose my favorite participant in this jamboree. At times it's the ellegance of Benny Carter's alto that takes me completely, at times Clark Terry's unique warmth on his horns, at times complex but swinging phrases from Joe Pass' guitar, but there's also Tommy Flanagan's intelligent piano,

fearless Roy Eldridge who attacks every solo as his life would depend on it....

Weeeel, I guess you can guess my recommendation for this DVD... The picture doesn't seem digitally enhanced, but it's in colour and the sound is fairly good, while the music is MAGNIFICENT. Am I repeating myself?

BUY BUY BUY.
