5.0 out of 5 stars 98% + 5% (Military points) = 103%
The author gives a great knock down on the material and basics of civil service testing for police officer. However, there are several tests out there that ask personality type questions. The book will not be of much help to one in this area. Answer the questions honestly and keep your integrity intact. If you don't pass, hold your chin up and go on to the next test...

3.0 out of 5 stars General good review and guide
This book is a good guide for law enforcement entrance exams. But for California, it will not be much help. Some agencies in California do use this format but most do not. Out of seven sections only two will help ( Reading Comprehension, Report Writing: Grammar and Spelling).

The book will not be of much help to one in this area. Answer the questions honestly and keep your integrity intact. If you don't pass, hold your chin up and go on to the next test. Chances are that the police department that uses the personality type civil service exam, need flexibility in choosing the right individuals for their department. Yes, the good old boy system is still alive and kicking. Don't feel blue. It is no reflection of one's intelligence or how well you test. Recently, I took a text-book, civil service exam. With the use of this book, I was able to score very high. If you are looking to pass the Police Officer Civil Service Exam, I highly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars No More Struggling on the Police Exam, February 17, 2000
By A Customer
I struggled on numerous written police exams not making it to the next step in the hiring process. After reading every chapter, studying the problems and taking the two practice exams in "Norman Hall's Police Exam Preparation Book" I scored an 83% on the test. This book is a must if You are serious about becoming a police officer and are struggling with the written test portion in the hiring process. I felt relaxed and confident because the test seemed so much easier after Norm Hall prepared me for the hardest of questions and overall a higher caliber test then it actually turn out to be. I highly recommend this book to anyone trying to pass the written exam or just boost their score. Good luck.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good book among many choices., April 11, 2003
By A Customer
Norman Hall's Police Exam Prep Book gives you a good idea of what to expect with many police exams. I found "Barron's Police Officer Exam" book to have a slight edge, because it's more up to date and better organized. I also like "Guide to Careers in Federal Law Enforcement" and "FBI Careers," both by Thomas H. Ackerman, as prep guides for careers in federal law enforcement. Although all of the books mentioned above are excellent, my choice is Barron's for cop jobs and Ackerman for the feds.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cetainly Worth the Money, April 12, 2000
I found this book to be a good way to prepare for the civil service test I took. It prepared me for all the questions I may encounter except for a small portion. I did, however, as I was doing the practice exams, find mistakes in the answer key. This occured only on one or two questions, but was certainly misleading. Otherwise, this is a very good preparation book. I received a raw score of 86.7 and with college credit I will have a 95. If I take the test again, I will try another preparation book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Right on the money!, June 6, 2007

I have not taken the exam at this point, but I have reviewed/purchased other books and this one is the most thorough of them all. I'm really grateful there is a mathematical refresher because I have not honed in on my math skills in quite sometime. Also, the grammar, spelling and writing portion of the book helped to sharpen my wits. This books delivers exactly as promised and in my opinion, will help you pass the exam with no problems.

4.0 out of 5 stars You want this book, May 29, 2006

I've taken the basic exam, and did ok. Unfortunately military points, and other factors I wont get into here, okay is not enough. This book is the exam. The methods he recommends using involving making up your own stories to help with memory (something with sex usually works for me)has its advantages, although I think he overplays it in the book. I'm not completely through it, I still have mathematics left, but at this point I must say it is worth the money. And in my humble opinion, you get what you pay for, and more. However this is just 1 of 2 books with the words "Police Exam Prep" in the title that I bought, I'll let you know how the other one turns out.
