PROS:

-Lamp looks nice.
-Lamp is bright
-Lamp appears to be well made & sturdy, but only time will tell.

CONS:

-It's pretty common among these types of lamps, but it runs very hot. Don't put any heat sensitive devices/objects under the lamp. The lamp shade is also very hot to the touch.

-No dimmer. Once it's on - it's on. No adjusting the brightness. I wish manufacturers would provide this info to Amazon and other retailers. Not everyone needs a spotlight.

Great Amazon shipping that arrived within 2 days, but came with a defective bulb which seems to have happened to several past reviewers. Furthermore, the scant printed user info does not specify the pin-type of the replacement bulb since Type JCD 120V 50W bulb can come in several configurations. I spent half the evening on Google getting an unwanted crash course on halogen bulbs which apparently can come in G4, GY6.35, and G8 configurations. The warranty specifically excludes any bulb-related problems. If the manufacturer does not want to cover the bulb which is understandable, they should at least provide sufficient specifications for replacement bulbs. I went ahead and ordered the Sylvania bulb linked with this product on Amazon. It it turns out to be the wrong bulb, then I will change this review to a single star . . . what a frustrating experience (should have just drove to Office Depot). The overall appearance of the halogen lamp is as advertised (nothing special) and lever mechanism seems smooth and solid.

Okay everyone . . . don't bother with the linked bulb on Amazon (Sylvania 58660 50-Watt 12-Volt Halogen Single Ended Quartz Lamp with Clear Finish and GY6.35 Bi-Pin Base, 1 Pack #50T4QCLRP Sylvania). I ordered it and it does not fit. I widened the legs and got it to fit, but the bulb was immediately fried when I turned on the lamp . . . total waste of time and $$. I went to eBay and found a seller (lightingsaving) that was actually selling 10 bulbs G8 JC Type Halogen Bulbs / 120V 50W and they arrived within 5 days and work perfectly (10 halogen bulbs for < $12, they should get 5 stars!). Finally, I have a working lamp which works as expected, so I bumped the rating up to 3 stars. The trouble I had to go through to get a replacement bulb was ridiculous and the company really should have provided the exact bulb specifications. Now, I'm a self-taught expert on halgen bulbs . . .

As a Halogen light the unit is unquestionably bright. That is one of the big positives of Halogen bulbs. What impressed me most was the counterbalance design of the device. The lever and gears that allow for the easy and smooth lowering and raising of the lamp is ingenious and I would love to know the history of the design of this piece.

Pros:
- Great Design!
- Very bright light like all Halogens.
- Very clean white light.
- No flicker.
- Smooth movement of lamp arm.
- Long lasting bulb.
- Light device.

Negatives:
- Expensive replacement bulbs.
- The bulb runs extremely hot (Halogen normal).
- No change in brightness. (No high or low setting).

Solid unit were the biggest plus isn't the function but rather the incredibly efficient design.

The gear mechanism that permits the lamp height to be adjusted is designed so that the full weight of the lamp arm AND the load of the counterweight are transmitted through just a couple of tiny little gear teeth at the common fulcrum where the two lever arms that carry these weights cross. The position of the weights way out at the extremities of their respective lever-arms exacerbates the gear-loading situation. There is no adjustment possible on the engagement of the gear teeth. The result of these design features is that, if the gears are not made of durable materials and are not precisely aligned at assembly, they will strip. They do. The gears on the lamp I received were obviously very cheap 'pot metal' and arrived already stripped, probably from simply moving the arm at the factory when the unit was packaged. This is an execution and quality-control weakness, made more or less inevitable by the weak mechanical design.

It seems that some reviewers have had not problems with the gears. I can think of two possibilities: (1) the assembly tolerances might result in some units that are fine for a while, but even then if the arm is adjusted frequently eventual stripping of these gears is almost certain to occur, (2) there may have been recent design or material or manufacturing changes that have degraded the quality.

On the plus side - the lamp _looks_ great.

I'm returning mine for a refund.

Took the lamp out of the box and had to insert the halogen bulb (was not in place as shipped). Placed the lamp on the desk and the counter lever gear broke off of the stand. No stress applied but the gear was stripped and the bar holding it in place was broken. There was no apparent damage to the box. Frankly, for the price of return shipping it's not worth paying for an exchange. You can definitely do better .... AVOID THIS PRODUCT!!!!

The Lamp Normande Halogen Desk, Brushed Steel is wonderful. Just what i was looking for a stylish desk a long time. The size , material,weight and lighting add a touch great for those who need a good reading light. The dispatch and arrival time,excellent . When installing it give no complication. In addition to bringing in great detail its specifications and precautions.

I had one of these lamps next to my bed for two years (with no problems) and loved it so much I bought a second for the other side. It moves up and down with ease and looks very modern and stylish in the room. The light is nice and bright, so it's great for reading before bed (and would be great on a desk), but it would be nice to have a dimmer so it's not so bright first thing in the morning.

This is a really nice, sexy brushed steel lamp that I'm really happy with. The footprint is rather small, so it does not clutter up my desk too much. The counterweights not only provide a sturdy balance to the lamp, but act as levers to move the lamp head up or down. The long bar at the top does tend to get a little bit too hot, but it helps make adjusting the lamp shade easy.

Light is evenly spread with this lamp. I use it both for working at my PC, and reading at my desk.

Like all halogen lamps, this one does get quite hot, but I found the air vents on top keeps it more cooler than other halogens I've had. Plus, my cats love sleeping under it; it keeps their fur nice and toasty.

Despite its solid look, this desk lamp has poor workmanship and no quality. Mine lasted about 6 or 7 months. At first I thought I needed just a new bulb. Well, it proved me wrong.
I would NOT recommend it to anybody.

Looks nice, shines nice, all good except after 3 months the flat face that holds the light mechanism broke off the rounded part and is now just dangling uselessly. Tried to return the lamp only to find that Amazon warranty is only good for a month. Was it a good deal for me to buy an inexpensive, nice looking lamp that only worked for 3 months? Nope. I used to order a lot of stuff from Amazon but will have to watch it from now on. Gonna start giving my local brick & mortar vendors the first and last look from now on.
