4.0 out of 5 stars Not bad, for the price, October 10, 2008
This review is from: Normark Dual Stage Pocket Sharpener Silver (Misc.)
WHAT I LIKE: I've used these for years, and they work. They are so small, and so inexpensive, that you can have one in your fishing boat, one in the pocket of your hunting jacket, and a few lying around the garage, basement, and kitchen. If you lose one, it doesn't matter. They have two sets of sharpening rods, a coarse and a fine, marked with a "C" and "F", respectively. There is no skill involved, just draw the knife blade through the coarse rods 10-15 times, then 10 or so passes through the fine rods, and that's it.

WHAT I DON'T LIKE: They're a bit fragile. If your knive has a heavy, stiff blade - like a military Kabar - you can break the rods if you press too hard.

The knives don't stay sharp too long. This is not a huge problem, since it's easy to re-sharpen them, but when we butcher deer each person's knife has to be sharpened at least a couple of times each hour. How that compares to other types of sharpeners, I couldn't say.

They wear out. After a while the "V" notch turns into a "U" and at that point, toss them out because they will not sharpen anymore.

You can't buy replacement ceramic rods; one the rods are dull, it's time to throw the whole thing away. But with a cost of about $3 apiece, who cares?

This thing actually works. In my whole life, I have never been able to sharpen a knife well. Now, I'm a pro. Great results for the price.
