4.0 out of 5 stars Nylon gears
Well, the nylon gears work well but I have wonderful nostalgic memories of my mother's hand-held egg beater -- with the metal gears -- that thing was turbocharged in the right hands. So I look at the nylon gears and say -- "when will they strip? Will a piece fly off and fall into the batter unbeknownst to me? Will I be able to get the gears replaced? Do I even WANT to...

1.0 out of 5 stars Arrived with jammed gear, didn't work...
Perhaps this happens with only one in a thousand, but the egg beater arrived broken, with a jammed gear. More likely 1 in 100 as those nylon gears (not like the metal ones of the old days) break after awhile anyway. Made me wonder, don't they even crank the thing once to make sure it works before packaging it? I bought a good balloon whisk instead and I love it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Nylon gears, October 26, 2010

That said -- well ... what else can I say -- Keep one in case the power goes but your (gas) oven is alive and well and you want to cook by candlelight (set those candles on a safe fireproof petproof surface please) -- this hand-beater does the job.

And you don't have to remember to turn it off and unplug it once the batter has been poured and you want to lick all that tasty sugary stuff that's left on the beaters.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great price!, May 2, 2010

Bought this specific products for the price and that it was metal. First one I had to return because the beaters would get stuck, second one works much better. Still sometimes it hesitates, but for quick and easy mixing I love having it in the kitchen.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good mixer, does the job it was intended for, August 24, 2009

For the plusses, it does its job and it was inexpensive. The only minus is that the wire bar at the bottom is a little taller than my old one, so it does not get down to the bottom of the bowl quite as well. I'm still a bit undecided about the nylon gears. The small gears at the top of the beaters are nylon and I'm a little afraid they will strip or wear quickly. I guess only time will tell.

4.0 out of 5 stars Egg beater, February 22, 2010

Works pretty well. Good for the price, would recommend it. Be sure that parts are where they should be if you try to whip brown rice flour or something thick, the blades could stop working, make sure upper part where gear is for each blade is where it should be.
I recommend Not using this with any kind of gritty flour, as it can muck up the gears. That is my experience.

1.0 out of 5 stars not happy, January 31, 2010

I don't know if what I was trying to mix was to thick for this beater but now the blades bang together when I use it. This was about the second or third time I used it. And as another reviewer said it is difficult to mix stuff in the very bottom of the bowl.

3.0 out of 5 stars Norpro Hand Mixer, June 20, 2009
This review is from: Norpro Rotary Egg Beater (Kitchen)
This mixer is ok. It has a steel drive wheel but plastic gears at the top of the mixer shafts. It does not operate as smoothly as I had hoped. I'm not sure how the plastic gears will up over time - it may wear out quickly.

Probably the third time I used this, the shafts started to slip in the nylon gears. Will not function at all now. Expensive, shiney junk!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great, January 30, 2011

There's no this kind of beater here in South Korea.
So when I found this here, I didn't hesitate to purchase.
After reading some reviews, I worried about the quality though,
but the one that I received, is fine, and works very well.
It is a little bit heavy, so it gives me stability when I use this.
and the plastic gears something, I think it won't break or wear down easily.
I'm satisfied with it very much.

4.0 out of 5 stars Almost as good as the 50 year old ones, November 9, 2010

I've used this model for a few years now.

Pros: no chrome to peel off; fairly sturdy--accepts being banged around in the utensil drawer w/o getting out of whack, the nylon gears haven't stripped or chipped, the plastic handles stay on; its well-polished surfaces clean easily; it's a joy to use for whipping egg whites or cream.

Cons: round wire beaters don't scramble eggs or mix batter ingredients as quickly as the traditional flat blades did, though if you keep at it they will do the job; if the batter is a bit thick the nylon gears will sometimes slip, causing hesitations, under forces that older, metal ones would have handled. Took off a star for these downgrades.

Of course manual egg beaters don't work to mix doughs of any sort. Never did. For a dough recipe, if you don't have a powerful electric mixer, you can add dry ingredients gradually to the wet ones while using the beater, but you have to switch to mixing with a spoon and then your hands once the mixture gets really thick.
