I needed a good rotary grater to complement my standard box style, which tended to make a mess and endanger my fingers. The rotary type is particularly useful for shredding up an entire block of cheese such as asiago or parmesan for a cream sauce, as you can basically just toss the whole thing in there (or large pieces) and start turning.

This Norpro grater does an excellent job of shredding the cheese. I have used it a number of times for my favorite asiago cream sauce and the results are excellent. The first time I made the recipe, I used my regular box grater and it probably took me 3 times as long to get the job done, with a mess to clean up afterward from all the cheese falling outside the grater (I failed to put a plate under it). With this one, I can break the cheese wedge into 2 or 3 large pieces, grind away with fairly light effort either into a bowl or directly into the sauce, and be done.

One minor issue which I believe is common among rotary graters is the strip of cheese which gets trapped between the grater blade and the inside wall of the housing. There is obviously a little bit of clearance that allows the grater to rotate freely, and because cheese is squishy it will get stuck in there. However, this can be fairly easily pulled out and thrown into the grater at a different angle to grind it up, or just discarded (into your mouth, of course).

The grater is dishwasher safe and the drum portion fits easily in a silverware holder (for me anyway), whereas the housing is somewhat large and awkward but still fits.

However, washing the grater presents the one annoying feature: taking it apart. The grater drums have a threaded plastic end to which the handle screws after the drum is inserted into the main body.

My wife and I have now tried 6 different cheese graters. Each time, except in this case, we tried a new kind after the old one broke. With this cheese grater, we gave up after a couple months and bought something else.

The whole reason for this switch to a new grater was because of how the drums in this grater are designed. Half the drum has grating holes, the other half is plastic. This causes two very major problems:
1. You can never build momentum when grating the cheese. The part with the grater holes goes slow, and the part without goes fast. This is insanely annoying and makes the grating take forever.
2. Once the block of cheese gets grater down, the sliver that is left gets stuck on the plastic part of the drum, and is impossible to finish grating.

Fix the drum design, and this would be a nice grater. As is, skip it and find something better.

I bought this grater after using a friend's grater. The one my friend had needs the cheese cut into smaller pieces, and I wanted a bigger one that could take larger pieces. This is really well made and does a good job, but I found that my hands aren't quite jumbo enough to comfortably squeeze tension on it while grating, not something I had given consideration to when making my original purchasing decision.

I wanted a hand crank grater in part for cheese, but also for potatoes and other veggies to make hashbrowns, etc. I have bought 2 other smaller "restaurant" style crank graters. The two biggest drawbacks with those: the entry area for the grater was so small that you had to cut potatoes in half, and the grating holes were so small it just mushed the potato instead of grating it.

This grater works well with a potato and cheeses. You can fit an entire potato into the grating hole. The slicer attachment is nice for making homemade chips. As far as the assembly issue/trying to tighten the drum (that another reviewer had,) I just put my fingers into the tube, holding it against the wall and never had any issue tightening or loosening. I don't know why the other reviewer was trying to pinch it, as the tube is large and easy to access. (I'm a guy with large hands and I can get at least 3-4 finger in, which is plenty.)

In regards to clean-up, I put all the pieces in the top rack of the dishwasher. They come out clean and nothing gets stuck, like a previous hand grater I bought that did not come apart. I am sure if you buy the $100 plus electric models, they will be better. However, for the price, this is really a decent product that does the job and saves your knuckles!

I bought one of these because we eat a *lot* of cheese and it seemed like this would be much easier to use than our regular shredder, which is from Ikea. However, I have found this not to be true! Generally speaking, unless you are going to shred a seriously large quantity of cheese, it's easier to just use the regular shredder. This one requires a good amount of set up and clean up time, and it just isn't that easy to crank, even for soft cheese. Maybe especially for soft cheeses!

Really, we only use this when we're going to make lasagna or some other dish that requires a large amount of shredded cheese.
