4.0 out of 5 stars Just my opinion
I really like this item. It is easy to use. I ordered this item and the Jacard 45 blade and comparing the two this is easiest to use. This one does not stick into the meat as hard as the Jacard blades as I have recently learned. Just punch down and move on. Its easy to clean. The only down fall I had with item was after washing it several times, I noticed it started...

1.0 out of 5 stars Great idea, difficult to clean
I loved this product at first. It tenderizes the toughest meats fast. Makes marinades absorb even better. BUT- it rusted after washing in the dishwasher. Also- the flat part that pounds the meat-lost it's spring action. Also, meat juices got trapped on the inside, causing me concern when using with raw pork and chicken. Great concept- not perfected yet.

The only down fall I had with item was after washing it several times, I noticed it started to rust at the base of the tenderizer, but I used W-D 40 and it came off. I had to rewash but it is still easier to use on meat especially thick and large tri-tips.

2.0 out of 5 stars Worked well, for a while., November 30, 2002

I found the Norpro professional meat tenderizer a very useful tool for effectively tenderizing less tender cuts of meats and also for pounding seasonings into meat. I liked the long, sharp prongs much better than the usual shallow, dull surfaces of other tenderizers. This tenderizer has a retracting platform that protects the user from being injured on the spikes. However, after a few months' light use, the spring on my tenderizer broke and no longer controls the platform. The spikes are now exposed at all times, resulting in several minor injuries to hands, or whatever body part comes in contact with it. This product was wonderful while it lasted, but now is a hazard.

After reading the review I reconsidered but decided to give it a try but skipped the dishwasher. Immediately after use I soak it in a container of hot soapy water and swish a bit, rinse, swish it through another round or two of soapy water just to be sure that there is nothing left and let it air dry. I've found that this is pretty effective in getting it clean and its effectiveness in tenderizing is worth the extra effort.

5.0 out of 5 stars just what i was looking for, June 25, 2003

This tenderizer is awesome!!! It really tenderizes the meat, plus I like to marinade a LOT, and I use this tenderizer on both sides of the meat, and it really gets the flavor of the marinade all the way through the meat. (not just a hint of flavor)I would not hesitate to buy this again, or give as a gift. I haven't had the trouble others had with it falling apart, I just hand wash it immediately after I am done, and let it stand to dry.

4.0 out of 5 stars Metal needs oil to keep from rusting, December 22, 2009

This review is from: Norpro Professional Meat Tenderizer (Kitchen)
I like this tenderizer better than any I have ever used. It's only weakness is the plastic guide for the spikes tend to rotate occasionally and block the spikes from passing through. It would be nice if the other metal parts were make from a good stainless steel to keep it from rusting. I learned to spray it with cooking oil before I use it to keep it from sticking in the meat. After I wash it I also spray it with cooking oil because it keeps it from rusting. If you do not it will rust quickly at the base of the spikes which is apparently make from a cheap steel. For the price it is excellent. I would pay more for one made from quality stainless steel throughout.

The tenderizer is a very good product have used many times the spikes do spread the seasonings throughout the meat. The only problem is the utensil is dificult to clean without a dishwasher (by hand) other than that very pleased with it....

5.0 out of 5 stars Norpro Meat Tenderizer, August 22, 2005

For under 8$, you will not find a better made meat tenderizer. Until My Wife bought this for me, I was using a tightly wrapped handfull of shish-ka-bob skewers to tenderize steaks, roasts, chops, etc. Well made, sharp tines do not leave open holes, or tear the meat. Great for pre-marinade, or right to the grill. Retractable, spring loaded safety cover conceals needles so that it can be safely found in the ever filling utensil drawer without stabbing your hands. Easy to clean, and did I mention that for under 8 bucks, you can't beat it?

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice Kitchen Tool, August 22, 2005

This meat tenderizer is substantial in construction. The design is innovative. The puncture points are protected when not being used by the round plate that has to be pushed back to access them (this is done automatically when the tool is used pressed into the meat your are tenderizing). This is a very nice safety feature. The handle is easy to hold and sturdy. It washes in the dishwasher. I am pleased with this product.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!, April 25, 2005

We used to use a fork to pierce the meat we were going to cook. I was shopping for Christmas presents at a local kitchen shop and found this wonderful little gadget. As it turns out my mother thought it was just as great and also bought it for him. I decided to keep the one I purchased for myself, and I love it; we use all of the time. It is great for both dry rubs and marinades.
