The best roller for homade pizza,

This review is from: Norpro Deluxe Pastry & Pizza Roller (Kitchen)
If you make your own pizza dough this is the roller for you. I actually buy mine from "Fresh and Easy" but it's still the same. I use to use a regular rolling pin but that didn't work out my mom got me this and I've been in love with it ever since. What's so great about it is it's small enough to roll the dough in the pizza pan. With the small rounded end it's easy to get in the corners of the pan and get a ridge on the edges without any effort with the bigger roller it's easy to spread the dough out from the center of the pan. The only thing that you have to watch out for is not to soak it or keep it in water for long, it tends to start discoloring the wood and then start splitting after a while. I season mine with oil every now and then.I've tried the marble version but the handle was cramped and the wire roller holders were twisted (I twisted them back though). The marble version does have some advantages; it's heavier which makes it easier to roll the dough out, its easier to clean, you can put it in the dishwasher and you can let it soak. If you have smaller hands you might like it more. The funny thing is is that Amazon keeps changing pictures of this roller from the shorter wooden roller to the longer version I'm reviewing. Get the longer one.

I like making homemade pizzas, I have all the gear and am perfecting recipes ... Though with some limited counter space, and the inability to manipulate the pizza dough as I want with a standard rolling pin, this Pastry/Pizza roller is perfect. Even if you HAVE a lot of counter space, it has the advantage to have more control over the dough when you roll it out. Most of you that are looking to order this, already know why you may want or need it, but to comment on what I mean about `control' ... When rolling dough, and having a recipe (or desire) to make a nicely edged crust, a larger rolling pin can only flatten out the entire ball of dough. With this, you can roll out the dough, but put more effort into the center, leaving an outer ring of un-rolled dough, which will rise more and create a `breadier' crust (should you want one). And, if your dough is not so circular, then it's even better when rolling smaller personal pizzas, square or uniquely shaped dough. Happy Rolling :)

cheap metal, designed to fail,

i was very happy with this roller, but it only lasted about a month. i used it for pizza and tortillas about 3 times a week. the metal does not go all the way through but is instead plugs with spades to prevent it from turning. mine actually broke off at one of the metal plugs (just like the other reviewer). i always hand washed and never soaked and probably never even got the handle wet since i would scrub off the roller. if it wouldn't have broken at the handle these plugs would have worked their way loose i'm guessing after about a year (there is already some play on the small side). if the metal was a little higher quality and went all the way through the wood this would last a lifetime, but instead lasts for about 15 uses. i'm guessing all of the other reviewers either use it very occasionally or have not owned it for long.
