Every once in a while there comes along a gadget that you wonder how you did without. This is one. No guesswork, only perfectly cooked eggs. I've used this handly little device to make soft-boiled and hard-boiled eggs, and they have always come out perfect. Just drop it in the water and take the pan off the burner when the color advances to the point you want your eggs cooked.

The Norpro Egg Rite Timer has never failed me. It is perfectly accurate every time I use it. Drop it in the water, and know EXACTLY what stage of done-ness your eggs are at any time. My eggs are now always free of any green tint (from being overdone) and the yolks are creamy.
I truly love this gadget, and I hardly ever say that in reviews. It works without fail, it's easy to clean, is too small to create clutter, and it's inexpensive. What else could you want? You should definitely buy this, unless you don't boil eggs.

Horrible epoxy smell,

I used it once. It did work well as a timer - the eggs were cooked medium, as it indicated.
But the horrible epoxy smell this thing gives off when it is sitting in boiling water worries me. Even after removing it from the water, the smell was still coming from the water, which means that the chemicals from this thing are leaching into the water, and probably into the eggs. Eggshells are porous, after all. I let it sit by itself in boiling water for a while, hoping the smell would go away after a while, but it's not. I don't think I'll use it again, and would definitely not recommend it. Get a timer instead.

This deceptively simple yet amazingly useful little tool is one of those secret gems that you love having in your kitchen day after day. Having cooked hard boiled eggs since I was 7, and being a decent cook, I have always been frustrated by my inability to get them PERFECT time after time. After all, what could be simpler? Yet, as we all know, it is not that simple... This egg timer is thrown into the pan with the eggs, and is able to represent graphically (through the color change of the the resin block itself) the completion of the cooking process for the eggs that accompany it. Because it represents the full cooking history, is still works at any altitude, or through changes in burner control. Once the whole resin block has changed color, it is time to take the eggs out and throw them in cold (or icy) water. The only thing this amazing little tool lacks is an audible timer - it would be great not to have to keep an eye on the color but be reminded of the right time when the eggs are due. Of course, monitoring the color directly allows you to aim for different outcomes in the consistency of the yokes as well, by removing the pan from heat when the color change reaches one of the several intermediate marking indicators. All in all, I give it a rare 5 stars!

When I first bought this handy little gadget I didn't know how I had ever lived without it. After using it about 15 times however, I removed it from the pot to discover it had split completely in half along a line where it had been fused together. I had bought one for my mom as well and her's did the same thing about two months later. Very dissapointing...

It does work and you dont have to worry about green eggs anymore. But as the plastic egg is boiling there is a strong chemical/ plastic smell in the kitchen that's kind of scary. I hope Im not eating any strange chemicals.

A strong plastic burning smell covered the kitchen when boiled this with the egg, chemicals must be flowing into the water when boiling. Can not be safe to use because egg shells are porous!

I was stunned that something used for cooking can produce such horrible plastic stink. I have little kids and with all the fuss about BPA this is definitely a candidate for some more research what happens to one using this timer. I will get a good olf fashion clock with a ring. The timer also does not make a sound so you have to watch the eggs and "enjoy" the stink. Norpro what are you thinking??

The first time I used it I put a little white vinegar into the water with the eggs and timer. It seemed to cut down on the plastic smell. Also the vinegar will seal your eggs if they crack preventing the insides from leaking out. I did notice the timer has to be completely dark for the eggs to be done instead of the little light circle in the middle like is stated on the package

At the recommendation of a friend who had used one of these for years I found these online and bought 4 of them: one for my friend, one for me, one for my dad, and one for my sister. The first time we used the timer I got a headache from the plastic fumes smell. My husband did the next batch of eggs when I was out of the house and told me that the air still filled with the smell of burning plastic. The eggs don't taste like the plastic smell, but I really hesitate to continue use of this gadget given the impact on my air quality and the worry about what it's dumping into the cooking water. |
