4.0 out of 5 stars love it February 12, 2007

This is a great, no smell, easy to carry, empty, and clean compost container solution. I have not looked in to replacing the charcoal filters. If that is reasonably priced and available, this is a five star item.

EDIT: Yes, we've been using this for a long time now and it IS a five star product. Not because the filters are "reasonably priced and available", but because I found you can wash the filters with dish soap, air dry. and they are good for weeks or months again!

5.0 out of 5 stars Just what I needed! May 30, 2007

Although this appears to be nothing more than an expensive stainless steel bucket, it is perfect for my kitchen scrap storage. The filter really does keep the odor from my kitchen. I find it can hold about a week's worth of scraps (unless I get crazy cooking). The wide mouth allows me to put the vegie peels or coffee grounds in without touching anything inside or spilling it all over the counter. It's easy to empty, and easy to clean. It looks nice on my countertop, unlike the plastic pail I had previously. I have had this for about 6 weeks now, and the filter appears to be working just fine. I will have to find out about replacements.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not stainless steel - Don't waste your money August 21, 2010
By Jodi
We paid the premium price for this product because it is supposed to be made of stainless steel. However, the speed with which this thin metal bucket begins to rust would seem to indicate that it is NOT made of stainless steel, or it is made from the cheapest grade of stainless steel possible.
We really liked the idea of the filter in the lid, and it did look nice on the counter (for a while). Was definitely an upgrade from the cheap, plastic eyesore of a pail we had before.
HOWEVER, when you pay nearly $40.00 for a product because it is supposed to be made of stainless steel, you should expect it to last like a good piece of silverware. This does not.
Buy something cheaper, you are wasting your money on this one.

UPDATE- May 2012 - The sides of this Chinese piece of engineering have now rusted through. We woke up this morning to a puddle of brown "compost juice" all over our counter because this bucket is now leaking. Apparently the rust has gotten the best of it and there is a pinhole leak in it. Today our compost bin will be going in the recycle bin.

1.0 out of 5 stars So many good qualities, but one terrible flaw December 5, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase
Initially, I loved this composter- the lid fits tightly and is easy to open with one hand. It looks OK on the counter. It is light and well designed for carrying. BUT the holes in the lid are large and it quickly became a fruit fly magnet. It was such a disappointment. I am going to go back to using a cylindrical truly airtight container.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just what I needed... February 16, 2006

This unit is well build, and things actually fit together quite nicely. Some cheaper unit requires you to push or pull the top to get a tight seal. It is attractive looking, and the stainless steel material also means that you don't have to worry about dropping it (except the mess) and you can also take a soft steel wool and scrape the hell out of if you need to.

P.S I have yet to try this myself, but I know there are special corn-based lining for compost piles - this may make clean up easier.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome January 7, 2008

The fruit flies and smell of the previous compost bucket were causing my roommates to rebel against our continuing to compost at all. I bought this little pail, and the problems are solved. NO fruit flies (yay!) and there are times when we've had stuff in there for weeks that we'd forgotten about, brewing a truly nasty moldy mess, but still no smell (until we open the pail, of course). We've had it several months now and have not felt a need to change the filter yet; it still seems to be working fine. I'd recommend it to anyone who doesn't have the self-discipline to take out composting scraps every day.

1.0 out of 5 stars Fruit Fly Nest May 16, 2011
By RR
A word of warning- the holes in the top of the bin allow fruit flies to enter and lay eggs in the carbon material. If you are not prone to fruit flies, are not squeamish about boiling the carbon to kill them or dealing with maggots than go for it. But, I would recommend a product without the top holes or a carbon insert.

I had mine for about 2-3 months before I realized what was going on. Also, some people online did not notice until they had a ton (infestation) coming out of the bin when they opened it.
Ew!!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Very Poor Quality Product August 18, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase
We ordered this stainless steel compost pail as a durable and attractive way to store our compost scraps, replacing the plastic pail we used. On the original unit we received the lid seam split open after only a couple of weeks and had to be returned. Our second unit has now been returned because the can/pail portion of the unit split down the seam. The unit appears attractive, but the lid is not easy to use (Friction is higher than expected). I would not recommend this composter to anyone given the poor quality we have experienced.

We love our new compost keeper. The ceramic one we tried earlier became chipped and tacky-looking. This is very easy to clean and lighter weight as well.
