This review is from: Norpro 18 Inch Aluminum Magnetic Knife Bar (Kitchen)
My kitchen is small and I wanted to get rid of the bulky knife block on the counter, freeing up some space. This magnetic strip works great and looks good. My husband installed it for me and is something of a perfectionist; he wasn't pleased with the screws that came with it, so he used some other ones.

Great magnets, crappy mounting system,

The problem with the mounting system is that it's too easy for the endcaps to slip off of the screws. Instead of the screws going completely through the endcaps (or the bar itself, for that matter), the endcaps slide onto the screws. Basically this means that you have to mount one endcap to the wall, tighten it, slide the bar over the endcap, and then slide the remaining endcap both into the bar and over the other screw (meaning you can't tighten the second screw). Unless you get them exactly right, the bar has about 1/4 inch of play and slides back and forth, and because the endcaps are not particularly tight, this means that pushing one end can push the opposite endcap off the screw. I was tempted to drill holes through the bar and use some very long screws with heads that I could make flush with the surface. This was a little more work than I wanted today, though.
And yes, the mounting hardware is inadequate. They provided the weirdest, most useless wall anchors I've ever seen. They're not tapered, so they can fall into the wall quite easily if your drilled hole is even slightly too large. Even after using my own screws and anchors, I was uncomfortable with the amount of movement, so I hot-glued the entire thing to the wall; that won't keep it from falling, but it did reduce the wiggling. It holds knives perfectly, but Norpro should come up with a different mounting solution. I took off 2 stars for the poor mounting solution and hardware.

The knife holder is very nice. It works well, tension is just about perfect for keeping the knives secure and not being too difficult to pull off. Looks good, and unlike the other reviewers i found the wall anchors and screws to be perfectly capable. Good buy.

This is a great product. I bought 2 and put them side by side. They fit perfect. The only thing bad is the hardware(screws and wall plugs) they provide with them. I have a lot better quality wall plugs and larger screws I used of my own. They mounted a lot stronger and no worries. Make sure to have a level handy.

Good product. Poor screws and anchors. For a product that is holding sharp knives it is upsetting that they would not include sturdy hardware. I installed this with the hardware provided and had to uninstall and to it again with much sturdier anchors and screws.

I was a bit hesitant to order this after reading some reviews that said it was hard to install properly/evenly. I had visions of a wobbly knife rack, but decided to order it anyway.Well, here's how NOT to have a wobbly knife rack (and it's Norpro's fault for not including any instructions whatsoever): the black plastic parts at each end which eventually hold the screws, COME OUT! Yes, they slide out from the back of the bar. So what you should do is remove those plastic end pieces, measure the correct distance and put the screws into the wall, then slide those plastic pieces around the screws, and snap the magnetic bar back on. That's what I wound up doing, and the bar is perfectly mounted on the wall- not at all wobbly or loose. The product itself is nice, heavy quality, and a good length. Totally happy with it, and would buy it again.

I bought this to hold my Komachi 2 knife set because the plastic knife block was too big and bulky for my kitchen, which has almost zero counter space. I used Gorilla Glue (not included) to attach the bar to the kitchen tile back splash so that it can be easily removed when I move out of my rental house (you can slide a blade behind the bar and cut through the Gorilla glue) so I can't vouch for the mounting hardware.
The bar fits my knives perfectly (and has the added benefit of displaying them beautifully) which I had not even planned on. The bar holds the knives with enough magnetic pressure that there is no fear of them falling but also not so much that you have to yank them off. The "height" of the knife bar make grabbing the knives easy and comfortable, allowing your fingers to get behind the handle to grab them. Photo: [...]

Exactly what I needed,

This review is from: Norpro 18 Inch Aluminum Magnetic Knife Bar (Kitchen)
This knife bar is exactly what I needed since I have a danger junkie four year old.
I hung mine vertically on the upper cabinet end piece and have had absolutely no problems with the end cap slipping despite it not being intended as a vertically hung bar. Unlike other reviewers, I had no issues whatsoever with the included hardware, but perhaps that is due to the fact that mine is screwed into hardwood rather than drywall. In any event, it does what it should and my little one can no longer get to the knives. She did attempt climbing on the counter to get them, but was unable to remove them from the magnetic strip because it does grip very well--even for my large chef knives. All, in all, I'm happy that it worked out because it's a tough magnet and helps me keep my aspiring chef a little more safe than I previously was able to do.

This arrived today, I was really excited about hanging it until I didn't find any instructions. I don't do well on my own. So now I have to wait for my husband to hang it...girls you know what I'm talking about...so I guess my knives are going to get a little duller until he has time to hang it...(read second coming of Christ here)The quality is superior to the one I have in my other house. I'll be ordering one again, once I watch how it;s hung here. |
