Very good strainer overall,

The metal is very high quality and the strainer seems to be well built and durable. The hook is nice for hanging. The only thing that makes it not a 5-star product is a small lip between the strainer mesh and the metal rim. When dumping things out of the strainer, they tend to catch on the lip and have to be fished out with your hand, which is mildly annoying.

Good...until the rivets snap,

I was happy with the performance of the strainer...easy to clean, fit well over the edges of pans, etc. But only a month after I received it, the handle snapped right off. I was draining a can of vegetables, so it doesn't seem to me that was overdoing it. I'll definitely check the fastenings on the next strainer I buy.

Overpriced and weak handle,
By Chez P. (Bay Area, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Norpro KRONA Stainless Steel 8 Inch Mesh Strainer (Kitchen)
I was disappointed at how weak the handle was considering how beefy it looks in the picture. The problem is that the flat metal piece of meatal between the thick handle and ring is just too thin. Straining a full load would cause the whole basket to sag to the point where I thought the spot weld were going to break. My old plastic handle strainer deflected less than this metal one. You can see why I would be disappointed considering this is an expensive strainer.
The spot welds that attach the handle to the steel ring also look very weak. I can see why the last reviewer's handle broke. The only reason I give it two stars instead of one is because it does look nice. But all show and no-go doesn't cut it in my kitchen.

Since I strain the waste from my birds' food (Exact Rainbow Diet for Canary/Finch), I needed a small strainer that had a small and gentle mesh. This strainer has exceeded my expectations in that it allows only the dusty powder through the mesh as I shake it over the waste basket. The strainer has gone through the dishwasher many times already and shows absolutely no sign of aging. It could be used for many tasks and comes highly recommended!
ADDED 2-13-11: Still looks brand new! And, I use it all the time.

Poorly Made Handle,
By
This review is from: Norpro KRONA Stainless Steel 8 Inch Mesh Strainer (Kitchen)
Although at first glance this strainer appears well-made, the handle broke off the first time I used it. I was using it to make gravy and don't think I put undue strain on it. Amazon was great and there was no problem returning it for a full refund with prepaid return shipping, but I will be looking for a better made strainer. This food strainer is not worth the price.

This has been in steady use for about two years now with no troubles. The metal where the handle and ring connect is thin, but so far ours has shown no signs of failure or fatigue. It gets used regularly for fine straining applications (like mashing ginger, or straining the "curd" out of lemon or lime pie fillings) and has held up perfectly. Aside from function, it also looks nice hanging from the ceiling rack.

Good for rinsing quinoa,

I bought this to rinse quinoa and am pleased with it. The wet quinoa slides right out, which surprised me.
I thought it would be a mess to get out.

Stainless steel is not supposed to rust, but this strainer rusted at least 10% of the area after the first wash.

Good design / fair quality / practical to use,

We got the Norpro KRONA Stainless Steel 8' Mesh Strainer last December to replace a similar strainer who broke after several years of good services. We bought this model thinking the higher price tag would bring a higher quality fabrication but I think we paid extra money only for a sleeker design... We use it 2 to 3 times everyday to drain water of pastas servings. The Norpro performs its assigned jobs pretty well although some shapes like Dececco Pasta Farfalle(Bowties) Pasta 20x16 OZ) or small sized pastas like stars, linguine, alphabets, De Cecco Capellini, 16 Ounce Boxes (Pack of 5) tend to get stuck between the mesh and the rim when you pour the cooked pastas onto a serving plate. Useful tips: The assembled parts of this strainer -- the woven mesh bowl, the holding rim, the hook and the handle are all made of "Stainless Steel" materials. Yet one has to take good care of this utensil to keep it totally rust proof. - Rinse your strainer with tap water immediately after use to avoid clogging the holes of the woven mesh. - Place on a simplehuman Compact Dishrack, Stainless Steel right away to avoid rust build-up on the mesh and the rim. We are expecting this kitchen tool to last 4 or 5 years if all goes well according to plan.

I bought this to strain my chicken and beef stocks, works wonderful without having to play around with cheesecloth. If it is a persistent batch of broth with lots of residue, I just put thru this strainer twice and it does the trick. Goes in the dishwasher well too.
