I did not want to spend $50-$75 on a large electric press nor did I want to give one counter space so I was pleased to see this small cast iron one. It works wonderfully and the only drawbacks are 1) only makes one at a time which is fine with me and 2) the downside is you will want more than one sandwich as it is so tasty! (Just get up and walk away and do not succumb to temptation!) I do find that I have to turn it over about 1/2 way through or one side gets browner than the other. You are not supposed to have to do that and maybe as I gain experience I will learn more tricks.

You brush just a little olive oil in the pan and on the press and let them sit on medium heat for a few minutes. You make your sandwich with mayo, thin sliced cheese, meat, olives, tomatoes, onions or whatever (no lettuce) and then brush both sides of the sandwich (you are supposed to use bread like a ciabatta bread but I think you could use any kind) with a little olive oil and Italian seasonings. Put the sandwich in the pan and the press on top, heat on medium and wait about 3 minutes. It makes this wonderful sandwich, hot and melted in the center and crisp in the outside.

Makes the ultimate toasted cheese sandwich.

It is little so it does not take up too much storage space.

9/14 - still using and enjoying this. I discovered you can buy submarine dressing (oil, vinegar, spices) and scoot a bit on each side (smear around with fingers quickly) and pop into the hot pan and that's delicious. I still have to turn them over to get even browning. That's OK.

This pan is an adorable little pan that makes a very good panini. The only reason I took off a star was due to the fact that the pan handle and top press handle are made of seemingly cheesy plastic. For the price I would expect them to be much nicer. As a bonus though, neither of the handles got hot while cooking so I guess that is the important thing. I normally plan to wear an oven mitt with cast iron. I had to turn my sandwich over to get an even brown but that may be due to my inexperience using it. I may not have let the top get heated thoroughly. I am happy with it and am looking forward to trying lots of different combinations. It is super cute and easily stored.

This is the perfect way to make individual panini for those of us who live alone. The pan itself if six inches square, so it's small. In fact I recommend that you layout a six by six square on a piece of paper to see just how small it really is. That could save you some disappointment.

I don't know why, but the panini seems to taste better grilled with cast iron. If you want to get an even browning preheat the press while you are bringing the pan up to temperature. Just add a little butter or olive oil in the bottom of the pan and sit the press in and heat. After about a minute place the panini in the pan, press and grill. You should be rewarded with an evenly toasted panini on both sides with a hot middle.

For general sandwich grilling the size I mentioned above is a limiting factor. For example I love grilling brie cheese in pumpernickel bread, but most slices of that bread (and many styles of rye) are too long to fit this pan. This is not a show stopper for me, but, again, I want to make sure you know what you are getting before you plunk down your money.

Cast iron comes with some special requirements. This one is pre-seasoned, but will require periodic reseasoning. Here is how: Start with boiling water in it for three to five minutes, then completely drying it and coating it with a light layer of oil. Wipe off any excess oil and then place it in an oven heated to 350 for a half hour. Let it cool and you are good to go. Also, NEVER use any sort of detergent when cleaning it. For one thing you will taste the detergent for a long time afterwards, and for another it defeats the purpose of cooking with cast iron. I use a soft bristle brush and hot water. Immediately after washing I thoroughly hand dry mine, then use a light coating of olive oil. You do not need to use the oil every time, but I do as a matter of habit.

this is a nice idea for a sandwich press but. unless you have real small bread this does not work. It is ok if you are doing say english muffin size bread, other wise the bread does not fit and you can't get the sandwich out with a spatula.

I bought this for my boyfriend and he is in love with it. It's well made, cast iron and just the right size. For everyone complaining about food sticking, YOU NEED TO TREAT CAST IRON BEFORE YOU USE IT (google it). After treatment, nothing will stick to this pan and it's perfect for making a decadent panini or quickly making a sample sandwich even tastier. The pan on it's own works great for frying up other things as well, like bacon and eggs.

I bought this pan for a specific use and it works well. I have a large grill pan, and I love that it makes lines on my boneless skinless chicken breasts and lifts them out of the fat while cooking. But when I just want to cook one breast, it is too large. I looked all over for a small pan and this is the only one I found. It is easy to clean and store, and I feel it can withstand high heat. The handle and the knob on top are plastic- kind of cheap-looking but they seem to be adequate.
