5.0 out of 5 stars Great tool addition to my kitchen!
So much easier to clean BBQ sauce, marinade, or other basting ingredients from this than a bristle brush. No more hairs, smelly bristles, etc. Nicely balanced handle.

3.0 out of 5 stars Won't make me give up my bristle brush
I purchased this hoping it might allow me to toss my standard bristle pasty and basting brush. Unfortunately although I do like it, it's not a replacement. With my bristle brush I get an even coating with just a once over, but with this I found myself needing to go over several times to get the same effect and even then it was uneven in it's distribution. I do prefer...

I wasn't sure about buying a silicone basting brush, but I will never use anything else to baste items on the grill. This worked better than I imagined...out of the drawer, to the grill and right to the dishwasher! No stray bristles on anything!

It's so much easier to get clean than the old pastry brush - and no stray hairs in the food!

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice, but not exactly as-advertised, November 29, 2006

I ordered two of these -- one for a gift, and one to use. I'm pleased with them. However, I noticed that what's pictured on this page and what I received are not exactly the same. My pastry brushes have a smoothly countoured metal handle that comes to a point at the end, with no hanging loop. What's pictured right now has a different handle and a hanging loop. However, the "business end" of the utensils appear to be identical.

Generally, I'm quite pleased (washes clean! no more stray bristles!). It is a little heavier than I expected, so this may not be the best choice if you're going to be using it all day long.

With my bristle brush I get an even coating with just a once over, but with this I found myself needing to go over several times to get the same effect and even then it was uneven in it's distribution. I do prefer this on cleanup, a little dish soap worked through the brush and a hot water rinse was all it took. This will still have a spot in my kitchen, but it'll be in addition to not in place of.

5.0 out of 5 stars Are there more stars?, May 12, 2007

After the last loaf of homemade bread had 'whiskers', I decided I had enough of it and threw it out. Happened upon hearing about the silicon brush on the FoodNetwork and went to work searching for the perfect product. I admit I was skeptical at first. Could those silicon bristles evenly distribute liquid over whatever I was brushing on? All I can say is that I will never again use a bristle brush! The silicon bristles so delicately swab on whatever it is you need to do in one perfect sweep, everything is covered. There are no streaks left. Nice and even basting. I use a brush alot when putting an eggwash on bread, or piecrust. Always being careful not to deflate the dough, I have no doubt that this will do the job without one bubble popped! I love the handle. The sleek design, the sturdiness of it, and the heft. It seems like the heft of the handle somehow balances out the need to at times brush something very delicate. I am so glad that I will no longer have to drown my bristle brushes in hot soapy dawn for hours to get the oil, smells of garlic, or whatever it may be out. What a brilliant idea. I guarantee if you get this, you will throw out any other bristle brush you have. This norpro is very good quality too.

I have uploaded a customer image of this brush with my Char-siu pork.

Let me get straight to the points.
Pro:
1) Silicone brush (no broken hair, easy to clean)
2) High grade 18/10 stainless steel
3) Attractive
4) Single piece stainless steel construction
5) Inexpensive
Cons:
1) Nothing too special compared to other silicone brushes.
2) Compared to finer nylon/boar hair brush, this silicone brush does not pick much liquid and disperse it very quickly.

This is my first silicone brush. Before this, I had been using the nylon fiber brushes, which the brush hair occasionally falls off and they are difficult to clean. I don't mind the brush hair fall off when I am cleaning them, but they also fall off when I am brushing my pastries and cookies -- and that is only when I see it. I am sure there were times when I did not notice the tiny hair falls off into my foods. In addition, cleaning those brushes are very time consuming. I had to soaked them in alternating solutions of vinegar and baking soda.

I finally fed up and decided to get a silicone brush. Its hair will not break off and if by some magical chances that it breaks off, I can certainly see it and remove it. Cleaning has been very easy. The reason I picked this brush over the other silicone brushes is largely because of its handle is a single piece construction. A single piece handle is easier to clean and it will not break apart. Of course, the fact that I bought it at $9 and with a 4-for-3 promotion deal have sweeten the deal.

The silicone brush head was not well-attached when it arrived. In fact, I was able to pull it out of the socket during cleaning today. However, I don't mind one bit. I simply put it back into the socket. I can buy some glue later and put them together, or I can just leave it as it is, which allows me to clean the brush head easier. This brush has lived up to my expectation.

However, a silicone brush with large brush hair has its disadvantages when compared to the more traditional finer hair brushes. The reason silicone brush is easier to clean is because it does not soak up much liquid. It tends to pick up relatively smaller amount of liquid and dispenses it quickly, whereas the finer hair brushes pick up more liquid and slowly release the liquid (which in turn makes the finer hair brushes more difficult to clean).

I am giving it a 4 star.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Pastry Brush, May 8, 2007

I really like the pastry brush much better than my old brush, which constantly left "hairs" on my pastry or on the chicken when I brushed it with marinade. It washes well in the dishwasher, too, something the old brush did not do well.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor construction and performance, June 14, 2010

This fell apart the first time I picked it up-- the black bristle section is only glued into the metal holder. I washed the interior section and bristles and tried using it, and it does a poor job of holding butter and spreading it evenly. Plus, the idea that any of the residual glue might be getting into the food was too much. So I threw it out after using it once.

I was skeptical about the silcone brush. But after using , it works great - no more shedding like the other brushes do.
