Baking Essential - Recommended,

I finally abandoned aluminum foil and both types of aluminum pie shields in favor of the silicone pie shield. I use my own pie pans and make my own crusts and the aluminum shields never fit quite right. Harold Imports Mrs. Anderson's 9-Inch Pie Shield, Progressive International Pie Crust Shields I bought two of the pie shields, and they worked perfectly on my 9" pie pans even with the decorative edge on the crust. I left them on through the entire baking time, and the edge of the crust turned out nicely browned all the way around. The shield becomes very hot in the oven so care should be taken when handling it.
The shield provides ample protection for the crust without covering the pie filling, and they can be easily removed without worrying about damaging the edge of the crust. Unlike the aluminum shields, the silicon pie shield won't become dented or banged up after a few uses or storage mishaps. This pie shield costs just a tad bit more than the aluminum ones, but it is well worth the extra cents especially if you bake a lot of pies. The shield is dishwasher safe and oven safe up to 500 degrees F.

I love how this product works. Much better than the aluminum shields. The only thing I was very disappointed in, and as it was the main reason I bought it, was it did not fit a 10" pie plate as advertised. It fits a 9" pan perfectly, but not a 10" pie plate. If you are looking to use this using a 10" pie plate, this is not the pie shield for you. Otherwise, this is a great produc.

Essential Item for Perfect Pies!,

So much better than foil or other items to shield the edge of the pie from burning! Even makes frozen pies taste more homemade ... truly is a great item for baking pies. If you have ever burned a crust on a pie (or gotten it a little dark), and you're tired of using foils to "try" and wrap the edge of a pie, this will be your saving grace. I recommend this whole-heartedly to anyone who wants to look like a pro but doesn't have that skillset. As someone who bakes a lot, especially at the holidays, I wish I had purchased this item sooner. Worth every penny!

I've been baking pies and making my own crusts for over 35 years, and I have always used strips of foil to keep the crust rim from getting too brown before the pie is done. I noticed the "Norpro Silicon Pie Crust Shield" at a cook store website, and it looked like a really good idea. I knew I could probably get it cheaper at Amazon, so I went there and bought it. I bake 9" pies, and I was amazed at how something that looked so promising DID NOT WORK at all! My crust edges were over browned as if I had not covered them at all. I'm back to the foil.
I noticed that quite a few reviews gave this thing a 5 star rating, and it makes me wonder if those people actually used it, or if they were talking about the same product. I hope that this review keeps you from making the same mistake I did. Fortunately,it was just a few bucks.

This is one of the best purchases I've ever made. I've been baking for over 50 years and have tried just about everything to keep my pie crust from over-browning. You can put this on at the beginning of baking, during or off and on at will. I've never found any pie shield for pumpkin pie that doesn't end up somehow getting in the pumpkin. This one does not. It just lays easily over baked or unbaked pie crust edge. I just made a fresh peach pie this morning. Crust is perfect!!!

I bought this for my 9" pie plate. It will fit provided you have a pretty lightly filled pie shell. You cannot mound the fruit in and expect it to fit. I make an apple pie that has no less then about 8 cups of apples in it. So, this really didn't work very well. What I plan to try is to cut out some of the ring to make it really only cover the edge crust. I think this should resolve my problem. I was just not too happy about quite how little filling you could use and have it work and how much I will have to fiddle to hopefully make it work as I desire. It does otherwise seem to be a well constructed item and I think should be quite workable for my purposes once altered.

Great product! Notes on "size" measurements...,

I bought two of these shields in Nov 2010, and have been very happy with this product - except that, as many reviewers have mentioned, this shield does NOT fit a 10" pie pan. I wanted to find out "why", so I pulled out my trusty tape measure. The results were interesting.1) I used a pie pan that was embossed on the bottom as being 10". 2) I laid the Norpro shield on the pan, and it didn't come close. 3) I then flipped the shield "face down" and measured it. ... In Norpro's defense - the INSIDE measurement was exactly 10 inches. 4) So, back to the 10" pie pan to do some measurements. Aha! Depends on WHERE you measure: ... The pan's INSIDE edge-to-edge measurement = 10" ... The pan's OUTSIDE edge-to-edge measurement = 10¾" I can honestly say that I never even considered the width of a pie pan's "lip". I expected the Norpro 10" shield to fit, simply because I "assumed" that a pie pan's given measurement was the outside diameter. And what are we commonly cautioned about the word "assume" ? In closing, some suggestions: I bought two shields so I could use scissors to "open" one of them. I draped the "opened" shield on the above 10" pie pan; this left a gap of about 3". I closed the gap with a small piece of foil - which the flexible shield held in place perfectly! I have a 10" Pyrex pie pan with handles, so there is NO shield that would "seat" properly. I just turn the Norpro silicone shield upside down, center it, and let rest on the crust. It has worked fine for me, and seems to give just as much "browning" protection. Hope this was helpful.

This clever device helps to prevent excessive darkening or burning on the edge of a pie crust before the center is completely cooked. It drops right into place, does not stick, cleans in the dishwasher, and can be tucked into a tight corner of your baking cabinet between uses.
A couple of reviewers have reported that it does not fit 10" pans. All I can say is that it fits mine. It is a little snug but it fits without damagine my fluted or crimped edges. For 9" pans, it is perfect. It will even work with 8" pans if positioned carefully. Begone, hateful strips of foil. This is the way to go.

The description for this item says "ideal for pies up to 10 inches" -- but this shield doesn't fit on any of my pie plates, including my 9" and 9.5" plates. The shield itself is indeed 10" in diameter, but every pie pan and plate I've ever encountered is measured by the diameter of the BOTTOM of the plate, so the diameter of the edges is more like 11-13", and this shield doesn't fit. It looks like a nice product -- just too small so I returned it. And to Amazon's credit, returns are simple and painless.
