Big and Strong Enough,

I had bought one of the cast aluminum citrus press a week before and broke it after one day. As I use it mostly for limes and lemons I didn't want a stand type press because it took up too much kitchen counter real estate. So I did a search on the net and came across this one.First it's stainless steel and built tough, very heavy duty. second it's got a 3" bowl, large enough for the large limes and lemons, but I'm afraid that it's too small for most oranges sold in supermarkets. I feel that the design could be improved with another roll of holes in the bottom of the press, but other than that it's the best I've come across. Since I've received it, I've had a chance to look in several specialty cooking stores and haven't found one comparable. **** Update, it's now 8/15/07. I use the press almost every day (my favorite drink is 2 packets of splenda, one fresh lime and a quart of carbonated water over ice). The press is in the same shape it when I bought it. No deformation of the handles (I'm a big guy 6'6" and 325 lbs and I've really squeezed the handles hard), after a pass through the dishwasher it shines like new. **** Update it's now 11/18/2009. Still using it just about every day and it still looks and works like new. **** Update 1/12/2012. Still works fine, I now have a small amount of deflection in the handles(hey after 6.5 years of hard use that's not too bad), my solution is to squeeze one half of the lime, take it out, put the other half in and then put the first half on top and squeeze them both. This is working for me, but if it gets any worse I'll consider getting a new one - I still love this device.

I bought one of the less expensive green aluminum juicers and it broke in the middle of the first lime. This is solidly built and I expect it to last for a very long time. Also, it's longer handle means it's easier to use.
UPDATE: It's been about 4.5 years since I bought this and it still works (and looks) like new. We go through about a dozen lemons and limes each week which comes out to over 5,000 uses without any problems. For me, in hindsight, spending a little extra for the Norpro was a good choice. BTW, I feel that honest, effective reviews can take the place of first-hand experiences that are lacking in online shopping. I've always appreciated the help I've received from other reviewers and work hard to return the favor as best as I can. I hope you found this review helpful and if there was anything you thought was lacking or unclear leave a comment and I'll do what I can to fix it.

a handy tip for squeezing,
By

This isn't immediately obvious, and indeed somewhat counter-intuitive, so I thought I would share. To prevent the juice from squirting up into your eyes, and to achieve proper extraction, you need to place the lemon or lime half with the cut side pointed down into the press, not up facing you, which would seem to fit better. The squeezer will get every last drop out, and in the process invert the skin of the citrus inside out, leaving you with only the skin and no juice.

Best Lemon/Lime Squeezer in the Market,
By
This review is from: Norpro Stainless-Steel Citrus Juice Press (Kitchen)
I ordered two lime squeezers, one from some place in Utah and this one. The one from Utah was a piece of junk. It had metal flakes coming off the squeezer (in case you wanted to add some toxicity to your juice) and when you tried to squeeze with it, the skin from your hand gets pinched between the two handles ... OUCH! It costed $9.99 but was worthless.
This one costed $19.99 and was well worth it. The smooth handles don't pinch your skin at all. In fact I let my kid use all the time. It works great on those medium sized limes. You see the juice flow out nice and uniformly. I do recommend microwaving refrigerated limes for 30-sec before cutting in half and squeezing. This lime-squeezer juices about 8 to 10 times faster than by just squeezing the lime with your hands. I've tried it on key-limes (they're real small like 1-inch in diameter). It works well, except that after you squeeze the key-lime once, you have to pop it back into shape and squeeze the same half again to get more juice. I usually do this three times per key-lime. I have not tried lemons, though I'm sure it will work fine. I would not try to do oranges (maybe clementines). This squeezer was clearly built for the smaller, more potent fruits. Cleaning is a cinch. Just run it under warm water and some soap and you're done. This is one of the best buys I've ever made. Oh I forgot to mention that I'm a man. Why does this matter? Cause you need a little strength to squeeze with this thing. It's strong, sturdy and safe, but you'll need some forearm power. My kid definitely has trouble squeezing without help. Perhaps after microwaving the limes, if you roll them firmly on a cutting board or counter-top that might make it easier. If you're a lime-aholic, this is a must-buy!!! I initially wrote this review about 2 years ago. I can't believe the price has gone up by 300%.

handle bends easily,

I bent the handle the first time I used it. Now I have bent it back and I have to hold it close to where it squeezes or the handle will bend again. It works well though, gets every drop out. I'm not sure what kind of stainless steel it is but it's not professional as stated on the box. Made in China.

This tool is probably the best thing I ever bought and found on amazon.com. It is my first time buying something just by reading reviews. And how lucky I am. Big thanks to the first reviewer. She(or he) gave a very detail and thorough review. And the tool is just as great as her(his) review. I have to say I am very satisfied with this tool. It is very easy to use and just the right weight. Also very good quality. If you are looking for squeezing juice with safety in mind, I suggest you get this stainless steel instead of cast iron which may have aluminum in it. Anyway, Very happy customer. Just hope it will not break after some uses like other brands. One correction for amazon's product description is this one is made in China not USA.

I just got it and love it!!! No more mess or splashing, and saves on hand fatigue too since its so heavy and hardworking. One helpful tip: not only cut the fruit in half before you put it cut side down in the juicer, but score the edges of the cut half in just a few spots too. That will help the lime/lemon to be flattened out inside of it, and therefore juiced completely!! Great product!! (P.S. I reviewed this a year ago so I decided to add a new footnote: after 1 yr of use, with limes, lemons and oranges, it continues to work great and the handles never bent! I STILL love it!)

Citrus Press,
By
This review is from: Norpro Stainless-Steel Citrus Juice Press (Kitchen)
This is an excellent product. I am a little arthritic, but find it easy to use due to the weight and balance. Using thin skinned lemons makes them easier to squeeze, however. Also, no need to separate pulp and seeds from the juice.
I would highly recommend this citrus press - good value. Sue from Ohio

This is a good example of a simple tool that works well.
Pop in a Lemon, Lime or small orange half and the juice flows right out. Remember to put the cut side of the fruit toward the holes so the juice come out the bottom. Seems backwards at first but it makes sense as it basicly turns the fruit inside out. This works amazingly better than juicing by hand, and I am large guy ;) After juicing it's good to clean it up soon, it's alot easier use very hot water because wax from the citrus peel tends to get stuck on it and makes cleaning difficult. I like the stainless, it looks modern compared to the other cast presses, and cleans up much more easily. Only problem is the limited size of fruit that can be used with it, only small oranges and forget about grapefruits. Need a bigger one for those anyway to get more leverage. But I am only using it for mixed drinks, and I mostly want lemons and limes for that so works great for me.

Not so great for lime,
By Sleepy (Long Island, NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Norpro Stainless-Steel Citrus Juice Press (Kitchen)
I bought this to squeeze limes for mojito (yeah, i guess i could also justify it with something like lemon for tea, but...).
Anyway, I'm not 100% happy with this press. I took advices of others on how to cut a lime in different ways in order to squeeze if fully, but i'm just not really happy with the result. IMHO, a little too much of juice/pulp stays unsqueezed. It also seems a bit too big for lime, maybe it would be more suitable for lemons. But, that being said, it is fast and not nearly as messy as squeezing with just a hand over the glass. So I do count it as significant improvement :) It's easy to clean and has a feeling that it will not break any time soon. |
