Pro: I am very pleased with the compost keeper. I have it in my sink and is very nice looking and unobtrusive. There is no noticeable odor emitting from it.

Con: When I opened the box it came in there was not even a sheet of paper explaining about the filter top. At first I tried to open the top, then realized that wouldn't happen.

1.0 out of 5 stars Unusable after 3 months because side split

I bought this compost pail with a mother's day gift certificate and loved it. However after 3 months of use including washing after emptying the pail in my garden, I found the side right under where the handle connected had split about 2 inches at what appears to be a seam in the metal. I have not found any product guarantee. I have an extra brand new filter set...

Had to spend my time several days to try and find out about filter replacement. Called Amazon and then emailed them. Finally received the phone number of the manufacturer and ultimately talked with a live person. It turns out you just remove the filter by pulling it out of opening and replacing it with a new one. All it would take is a simple piece of paper explaining this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Looks good and does a great job, January 22, 2009

No complaints here! Looks great on the counter, and does a great job containing any scent. Good size too, takes a full week for my family of 3 to fill up and we eat lots of fruits and veggies! Would recommend to friends!

We have been using this kitchen Compost Keeper for about 2 weeks now. Since my husband and I don't generate enough trash to empty the garbage daily, we were finding our trash can was constantly getting smelly. Finally, not wanting to waste larger bags that were half full, and being tired of coming home to a stinky kitchen, I decided we needed a Keeper. Besides feeling good about doing another good thing for the environment, our kitchen has been smell-free since we started using this! I bought the biodegradable bags for it as well, and that has made emptying it (as well as clean-up) a breeze. Since we are both teachers and therefore are home for the summer, we are certainly generating more waste. However, we have only needed to empty it every 5 days.
On the flip side, I have two gripes that I am hoping I will be able to find a solution for. First, since it is on our kitchen counter for convenient use, it tends to get spattered with water or just while preparing meals. It is also a shiny stainless, so it has more of a tendency to show fingerprints. When I have tried to wipe it with a wet sponge or paper towel, it streaks and/or doesn't come off. I tried a stainless cleaner, and that was even worse! I'm really hoping I can find some way to keep it clean! Second, while wiping the inside after emptying it yesterday, I noticed some rust stains beginning to form. I don't think that is supposed to happen with a stainless steel product. I went with stainless versus plastic as it seems plastic products absorb smells not matter what you do. However, I will be keeping an eye on the rusting and contacting the manufacturer if it continues.

This is a simple and elegant solution to composting ... the filter works incredibly well and there is no smell ... Nice capacity and the handle makes it portable to bring it to your cuttings.

I ordered this little bucket to keep food scraps in for vermicomposting. The lid is easy to pop on an off. I've had it for about a month, and the only thing odd about it is that the carbon filter is starting to grow some white mold on the inside. I probably need to just put it in the sun for a bit, but I am not really worried about this anyway. We pop our coffee grounds into it every day, so it gets a little steamy in there.

It works well, and it looks decent enough that my wife is happy to go along with me keeping it in the kitchen. I dump it out once a week, and I don't notice any smells coming from it. I would suggest following Bentley "the compost guy" Christie's advice of creating a false bottom our paper/cardboard to soak up any juices from your kitchen scraps. This cuts down on odors and adds "browns" to your bin, but more importantly, it makes the bucket easier to dump out.

If you are interested in worm composting, check out Bentley's web site on "red worm composting". Tons of free info from a friendly on knowledgeable guy. I bought my worms from him and I couldn't be happier with the worms and the personal touch via email follow-ups.

As someone who's wacko crazy about recycling and composting, I heartily rate this little unit five stars. There is NO odor, it's a breeze to clean, it stores handily out of sight under the sink. I considered the ceramic version, read unhappy comments about the flimsy handle and the ceramic's tendency to chip. This one answers both those concerns. Even my wife likes it. Great delivery from the third-party distributor.

Now, if I could find a sortable storage unit for my recyclables, I'd really be in pig heaven...

5.0 out of 5 stars Really is odor free, June 7, 2009
This review is from: Norpro Grip EZ Stainless Steel Compost Keeper (Kitchen)
This little bucket is very sturdy, odor free and if you can find corn based bio-bags to use as a liner, the walk out to the compost pile is that much easier. Our rural set up means we have well water and on-site septic; no in-sink garbage disposal. With a place to put food scraps so close at hand, it makes me wonder why I waited so long.

2.0 out of 5 stars Keeps smell out, difficult to clean after emptying, January 2, 2011

This review is from: Norpro Grip EZ Stainless Steel Compost Keeper (Kitchen)
I bought this to collect my compost over a couple days since I generate a lot of it by making green smoothies every day and making all my meals from scratch. It worked great at first, and the actual bucket is easy to rinse out, but the lid is the problem. The filter works great at keeping the odors blocked in, but there are a lot of crevices in the lid itself and in the filter. We ended up getting flies in the bucket that would lay eggs and hatch. They are so tiny and difficult to get rid of, and every time I opened the lid, they would fly out. I ended up using empty large plastic yogurt containers, which cost me nothing after I'd eaten the yogurt and work much better. I use two or three of them at a time and can store the same volume. I empty every 2-3 days and don't have any noticeable smell. They are so much easier to keep clean too. I've had no flies since switching. This product is now sitting in my garage because I didn't want to bring it back into my house. I was going to give it three stars since it works well for keeping the smell out, and looks nice, but the fact that I am not using it in favor or something much better and cheaper made me downgrade it to 2 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for the kitchen, May 8, 2009

We purchased this to replace a counter-top compost bin that did not have a filter. It holds about a week's worth of material (there's two adults in the house)and even when it is full there's no detectable odor when the bin is closed. We don't have any complaints with the item. Worth the investment and looks good on the counter.
