Definitely in my "Top Ten List" of Inspired Kitchen Gadgets!,

This review is from: Norpro Stainless Steel Scoop, 50mm (3-Tablespoon) (Kitchen)
Finally, an ice cream scoop that gets the ice cream out of its container AND then out of the scoop into the dish. Sounds like a no-brainer, right? Should be -- but this is the first scoop design I've ever used that managed both with equal ease. Most of the old-fashioned ones had a release mechanism that got the ice cream into the dish pretty well, but needed tons of hot water and the strength of 10 men and a boy to get the goodie out of its native container. More recent versions have made the container-to-scoop process less of a herculean task, but need the assistance of finger or other appendage to make it the rest of the way to the bowl. This delightful object has solved both problems. In addition, it's a God-send for baking cookies. I operate a virtual cookie factory every Christmas and have tried many techniques to speed the dough-to-baking pan transfer. Last year, I saw this scoop and its smaller (2 teaspoon) sibling at a kitchen supply place and purchased both. I was able to bang through all my drop cookies in record time -- hurrah! Whether ice cream or cookie baking is your passion, I can't think of a better way to spend 10 bucks! Enjoy!

You can use this for many things,

I can't say enough about how handy these are. I love my cookie scoop. This one is very sturdy and can take heavy use. One of the benefits of making a batch of cookies with this is that they all come out the uniform size. Uniform size helps in baking evenly and also they just look better once they start out from the same size and shape. They recommend scooping up ice cream for this, but I like the 2 tablespoon size to use when I put muffin batter into a tin, there is much less clean up!

ETA: Regarding the review above claiming a "horribly" "flawed design": There is no design flaw, only an unrealistic expectation. No one should ever use any sweeper scoop to dish HARD ice cream, They're not engineered for that. If I need to dish HARD ice cream (I make my own and it rarely freezes to HARD), I use a Zeroll Original 3-Ounce Aluminum Ice Cream Scoop and would heartily recommend it.========================================================================== I came to these Norpo scoops (I have three: a Norpro 35 mm Stainless Steel Scoop [one tablespoon], this one [three tablespoons] and a Norpro 56mm Stainless Steel Scoop [four tablespoons]) recently, in September, 2009, after a bad experience with the Oxo Good Grips Trigger Ice Cream Scoop. I really like them. Very well made. Coming from the OXO it's sort of like the difference in closing a door on a Benz and a Ugo. However, now I need to look for a TWO tablespoon scoop because this really (with all due deference to D. Evans) does hold three, and it's immaterial whether it's water or grains of salt, 2009 or any other year. ETA: In looking for a real 2 tablespoon model online today, I came across a vendor who claims to have one that "holds PRECISELY 2 tablespoons of your favorite ice cream, cookie dough, melons, chicken or potato salad..." (Emphasis added.) Unfortunately, it's the same model as this one, a Norpro #678. So much for precision. I'm not having much luck finding what I need so, a shout-out to Norpro: Label this one correctly as a three tablespoon and make a real two tablespoon model. ETA: I ordered the Norpro 39mm Stainless Steel Scoop and I'm making a guess it will hold two tablespoons. ETA: It doesn't. It holds almost, but not quite, two tablespoons. ETA: I see Norpro took my suggestion (and the suggestion of others) and labeled this correctly now as three tablespoons.

COOKIE SCOOPER,

This review is from: Norpro Stainless Steel Scoop, 50mm (3-Tablespoon) (Kitchen)
I have had this for at least 4 years now and i can't even imagine being without it. I bake cookies quite frequently and use this because it saves me time and all the cookies are uniformly the same size. You will get up to 4" cookies with this scooper and it makes great meatballs as well. I don't have any problems cleaning it or using it. I am ordering the smaller one knowing that i will have great success with it. Highly recommend every kitchen who does alot of baking.UPDATE: 09/20/2009 Still working good and use it all the time.

Great cookie scoop!,

This review is from: Norpro Stainless Steel Scoop, 50mm (3-Tablespoon) (Kitchen)
This is a perfect cookie scoop. I like to make slightly larger cookies, and this scoop gets the cookie dough out perfectly every time. Because the cookies are larger, it is a good idea to flatten each blob of dough slightly before baking. (as I did when I worked in a bakery) I have not used this scoop for anything else, because I only bought it for cookies. It does not look like it would work that great for ice cream, but I don't know. I love making cookies with it!!!

Nice well built scoop, but like others have said, this is NOT a 2 TBS. scoop. I measured it and it will hold exactly 3 TBS. of water. I wanted a scoop that was about 3 TBS., but couldn't find one. So, listening to what the other comments were, I ordered one anyway and got EXACTLY what I wanted. Yes, you would think that Norpro would not miss a detail like this... Go figure. Anyway, I give the scoop five stars for quality and subtract one for inaccuracy. Bottom line: If you do NOT want a quality 3 TBS. scoop, do not order this one. Personally, I'm happy with it.

Don't have this yet? What are you waiting for? This is a must for any cookie baker! You'll get perfectly round cookies everytime, and without getting your hands in the dough (unless you like to taste your creations :). It's far more efficient that the old two spoon method. You'll get those cookie sheets in the oven much more quickly! This one is a good size for making chocolate chip cookies. I use the smaller one when I'm making cookies for the kids or making peanut butter balls/chocolates ... This is a great gadget to add to your drawer. Highly recommended from a frequent cookie baker.

Not good for ice cream,
By
This review is from: Norpro Stainless Steel Scoop, 50mm (3-Tablespoon) (Kitchen)
I notice this item is not billed as an ice cream scoop. Odd since it is the classic ice cream scoop design. It's probably fine for cookie dough or even sherbet that is softer than ice cream, but for ice cream it is not sturdy enough. The all metal construction seems like it would be better than other scoops of this design that use plastic gears, but unfortunately under heavy use even these metal gears slip and the scoop fails. The problem is that when you really have some tough ice cream, when you squeeze the handle to activate the scraper that will release the cream from the scoop, the resistance of the cream causes you to have to squeeze hard. When you squeeze hard enough, the rack of teeth gives a little bit against the brace that holds the rack against the gear, and the rack slips. Once that happens, the gears lose their synchronization and then you need to repair the scoop. Despite not being sturdy enough to handle the ice cream, it is plenty sturdy enough to resist being repaired. It's difficult, and then it just fails again anyway.

This product works. It makes a little larger cookie and is part of my overall strategy to make the perfect chocolate chip cookie. My friends call me Mr. Fields.I use the smaller one (35 mm) to portion out my other secret ingredient. They are sturdy and feel like they will last forever. The complaint about the grip = LAME/Bogus. You wont be sorry with this scooper if you like a slightly larger cookie. |
