Book Description

December 14, 2001 007219281X 978-0072192810 2
Since the publication of the first edition, Nortel has acquired several companies since publication; these companies bring with them new technologies that are featured in the Second Edition. This edition contains tips not found in the documentation that comes with Nortel equipment. The CD-ROM includes complete configuration files that can be easily downloaded directly to Nortel devices. Each chapter walks quickly through the fundamentals of a given topic and moves to advanced coverage. Coverage runs the gamut from local ethernet to layer 3 switching, Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) and internetworking, so there's something here for network engineers in organizations large and small. It contains real-life situations and the best way to derive maximum performance from real networks.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Networking books come in two basic flavors: Platform-neutral and vendor-specific. Nortel Networks: The Complete Reference takes mainly the latter approach, explaining how data moves across (and among) networks based on Nortel equipment, including those products Nortel acquired when it bought Bay Networks.

There's rather a lot of theory and quite a number of universal truths mixed in with the Nortel information. For that reason, and because author James Knapp's presentation style is so strong, you're likely to derive value from this work even if you use other companies' hardware and software. Knapp's coverage runs the gamut from local Ethernet to Layer 3 switching, Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM), and internetworking, so there's something here for network engineers in organizations large and small.

Knapp's approach is unfailingly practical, always considering real-life situations and the best way to derive maximum performance from real networks. To this end, he's included numerous anecdotes from his time spent as a Nortel engineer, and he's provided conceptual background with excellent diagrams in many cases.

You'll particularly love this book if you own one of the Nortel products--listed below--that Knapp thoroughly investigates. For each covered product, you get a highly detailed look at its capabilities, appropriate use, and management specifics--all in an easy-to-follow style. For a shop that uses Nortel network equipment, this book should be required documentation. --David Wall

Topics covered: Theory of Ethernet and the Open Systems Interconnect (OSI) reference model, Ethernet implementations (with emphasis on BayStack, Centillion, and LattisSpan equipment), Layer 3 switching with Accelar gear, Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) concepts (including Quality of Service and Private Network-to-Network Interfaces), ATM as implemented under the Centillion series, and internetwork routing with Nortel routers. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From the Back Cover

The most authoritative volume available on Nortel Networking. Master Nortel technology--from installation to implementation--using this definitive resource. Nortel Networks: The Complete Reference offers detailed information on key networking technologies supported by Nortel products, including frame switching, switched token ring, Layer 3 switching, and ATM. You'll also find out how to integrate Nortel devices into an existing network. Plus, the bonus CD-ROM includes complete configuration files that can be easily downloaded directed to Nortel devices. Inside, you'll find out how to: get a complete overview of all Nortel Enterprise devices; master frame switching, gigabit ethernet, VLANs, and MultiLink Trunking (MLT); handle all aspects of token ring switching--source-routing, mixed architecture environments, internetworking, ring failures, cabling, and errors; implement Layer 3 switching and set up ilnternetwork routing, including RIP, OSPF, IGMP, and VRRP; use ATM technology--PVCs, SPVCs, UNI, LUNI, and LNNI signaling; LAN Emulation services; call routing; and multi-protocol over ATM (MPOA); set up a stable IISP call routing table and PNNI mesh in the Centillion product line, including the C1000 line; configure the Centillion switch product line with the SpeedView GUI; integrate Nortel technology into an existing infrastructure. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Use It As A Nortel Networks Certification Study Guide!, January 11, 2000
I work at Nortel Networks and this book is becoming quite popular within Nortel as a reference book and certification study guide. Just today I spoke with a Technical Support Engineer who failed the Nortel Networks Accelar certification exam last week. Then he read over the Accelar and Bridging sections of the Nortel Networks: The Complete Reference book and passed the test the second time around!
