5.0 out of 5 stars Scholarly, yet accessible.
This book is a little pricey, but sometimes you get what you pay for. The keys are fabulous, the photography excellent, and by limiting itself to boletes, this book covers most of what you will find, at least in North America. I have been collecting, identifying, and eating wild mushrooms for years, and this is one of the best reference books of the many I've used.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Quite as portrayed
The book is a large well documented book, however for the novice like myself there is too much technical terms, and not enough practical information. For example there were 5 pages devoted to "collecting, cooking, and preserving" out of some 400 pages. If you are into this for a college degree, you may be more pleased than myself, but I was looking for lots of color...

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Reference Guide, August 5, 2006

This is the best reference book I have on Boletes. Because it just covers boletes it is a fairly comprehensive guide, and the book is so easy to use. The keys make it easy to identify just about any Bolete. The descriptions are in alphabetical order as are the pictures so it is easy to flip through to find what you want. The pictures are incredible! The price was well worth it for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Bolete Book Ever, March 4, 2008

This is the best Bolete book ever published, that I have seen. Each fall I identify the various species of boletes that our Pacific Northwest mycological club gathers for our annual show. The club owns one of these books and I have used it for identification and teaching purposes. When I saw the price drop online I decided to buy my own. I believe others who have written more negative reviews just have not gotten far enough into the "mushroom world" to appreciate this fine text. For those I would say "stay to the easier picture books until you have more of a command of the terminology. There are reasons why the book is arranged the way it is (pictures not next to the text)." Come back to this text when you have got the hang of using dichotomous keys and understand the terminology. I bet that then you will appreciate this book a whole lot more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book, November 15, 2010
Had to wait for over half a year to get this in paperback, and missed identifying some things during the wait, but it was sooo worth waiting for. If you can identify the stem characteristics and read a key, this book will open the world of boletes to you. And what a tasty world that can be! Easily one of my favorite nature books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Book!, August 16, 2010
This book is absolutely wonderful! The photographs are fantastic and the information is precise and scientific. The amount of time and energy that was put into the creation of the book is incredible.

Any review under four stars is ridiculous. This is a comprehensive manual for North American Boletes. Don't purchase the book and then criticize it for being too technical or difficult to understand.

This is a comprehensive review of the boletes of North America.
It is rather "pricy" and while it is difficult to identify all
of the boletes in this region (the mid-Atlantic), the expansive
coverage makes identification even more frustrating!

As an expierenced schrommer most of the books on mushrooms had a limited reference on boletes. This book fills that gap. The photos and the text are first class. The book is pricey but well worth it to one who loves to hunt mushrooms!!!

Great book if you are a scientist, but for the average mushroom hunter it is way too complicated to use. Information is scattered thoughout the book so you are forever flipping pages Ex.Once you get to a name, you have to go to the index w/that name to find out where the picture it's at. Don't it make sense to have that info next to the mushroom name and description.
Don't waste your money, join a mushroom club!
