Suzan Shown Harjo, director of the Morning Star Foundation, an organization promoting Native American cultural rights, provides an excellent introduction that answers common questions about terminology (e.g., Indian, Native American), political status, and customs. A 10-page time line gives an overview of the Native American presence; a useful index of tribes and their sites concludes the book. A short glossary and bibliography provide additional information. Illustrations include drawings and black-and-white photographs.
The third edition of Eagle-Walking Turtles's Indian America: A Traveler's Companion (John Muir, 1993) has a similar format. However, it has no information on Canadian tribes, and only address and telephone number are given for Alaskan Bands. On the other hand, Indian America has a longer glossary, some entries as long as six pages, a table of Indian resident population by state, a listing of Indian moons, and a 65-page calendar of events.
Both guides should be available in public and academic libraries and secondary school media centers. If only one can be purchased, choose North American Indian Landmarks for the latest information on Native American sites. It is also available in hardcover from Gale for $34.95 (0-8103-8916-9).
