5.0 out of 5 stars North American Indian December 21, 2000
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I bought this book a few years ago for my kids. Recently, my son was doing a report on Apache Indians. I was amazed to find that an original photo I found on the internet matched the book illustration quite well. Everything in the book matched and sometimes exceeded all of the information that my son had on various Indian tribes. A simple, beautifully done introduction to American Indians for children!! I am going to buy a few more copies to give to my son's school library.

Living in the U.S. we can easily lose sight of the fact that before Europeans and other immigrants came to the U.S., the country was populated by American Indians. This book is a good introduction to the various major Indian tribes in the U.S. It's good for 2nd or 3rd grade, possibly 4th grade, although the actual pronunciation of the tribes might be difficult for some kids.

The book has nice, soft, detailed illustrations on each page, and a short summary on each tribe. The actual description of each tribe might be only 75 words, but between the description and the detailed illustrations, children will form a well-rounded undestanding of those who lived in America for centuries before most of their/our ancestors arrived here. This is a vital chunk of history to inculcate in the mind/psyche of a child.

5.0 out of 5 stars History June 26, 2012

This book is great! The illustrations look like paintings. The map shows you where these tribes were located in the USA territory. The book gives you short to the point information about daily living and their life-styles.

My grandkids and I read this and several other books about the American Indians.
Then we built play houses as were described in the books.

4.0 out of 5 stars North American Indians December 19, 2012

This book went hand in hand with our study on Native Americans. I have a first grader and a second grader and it helped scale down some of the information in their history book. It gives interesting facts about the different Native Americans that lived in different regions of the country while keeping it simple. It basically discusses how different tribes, in different regions, lived, what they ate, how they built their homes. My children seemed to enjoy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for young readers! October 4, 2011
By Darlene
Format:Paperback
I read this picture book aloud to my children. The illustrations are nice and colourful, and the book provides a good overview (without overwhelming young listeners) of various North American Indian tribes. I found the content interesting and age appropriate, and it is a good addition to our studies concerning Native Nations!

I also remember reading this book when I was a child, and I loved it then as much as I do now!

MY RATING: 5 stars! I loved it!! Highly recommended!

4.0 out of 5 stars Short but nice, good pictures August 23, 2011
Format:Paperback
I really appreciate this book. It has great pictures full of accurate details. This is important to me when choosing a book to hold children's attention. While the text may not explain the construction of a certain item, the children may observe it simply from noting the pictures. I appreciate that this book clearly expresses the great variety in Native American cultures. There are some variations in spelling from what I had learned (eg. Algonkian for Algonquin). It is a short book, but valuable and enjoyable to read.
