It's a good starting point for my 1st grader -- along with "History Pockets, Native Americans" & other books, we are enjoying our tour through Native American History.

I am going to buy a few more copies to give to my son's school library.

5.0 out of 5 stars Children in the United States should have knowledege of American Indians. This is a good starting point., October 13, 2011
This review is from: North American Indians (Pictureback(R)) (Paperback)
Living in the U.S. we can easily lose sight of the fact that before Europeans and other immigrants came to the U.S., the country was populated by American Indians. This book is a good introduction to the various major Indian tribes in the U.S. It's good for 2nd or 3rd grade, possibly 4th grade, although the actual pronunciation of the tribes might be difficult for some kids.

The book has nice, soft, detailed illustrations on each page, and a short summary on each tribe. The actual description of each tribe might be only 75 words, but between the description and the detailed illustrations, children will form a well-rounded undestanding of those who lived in America for centuries before most of their/our ancestors arrived here. This is a vital chunk of history to inculcate in the mind/psyche of a child.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for young readers!, October 4, 2011

I read this picture book aloud to my children. The illustrations are nice and colourful, and the book provides a good overview (without overwhelming young listeners) of various North American Indian tribes. I found the content interesting and age appropriate, and it is a good addition to our studies concerning Native Nations!

I also remember reading this book when I was a child, and I loved it then as much as I do now!

MY RATING: 5 stars! I loved it!! Highly recommended!

4.0 out of 5 stars Short but nice, good pictures, August 23, 2011
This review is from: North American Indians (Pictureback(R)) (Paperback)
I really appreciate this book. It has great pictures full of accurate details. This is important to me when choosing a book to hold children's attention. While the text may not explain the construction of a certain item, the children may observe it simply from noting the pictures. I appreciate that this book clearly expresses the great variety in Native American cultures. There are some variations in spelling from what I had learned (eg. Algonkian for Algonquin). It is a short book, but valuable and enjoyable to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good early book for children, November 10, 2010
This review is from: North American Indians (Pictureback(R)) (Paperback)
Great starting book for very young grades. It is good for reading aloud, and the illustrations are expert. This book showcases cultures, artifacts, clothing, lodging, the useful and beautiful things made by the Indians, their technology, their trade partners, and their basic geographic regions.

This is the second time we have bought this book. The first time it came with some curriculum that we used and resold, but we couldn't live without this book so I bought it for our personal library. It has wonderful illustrations and is very informative.

I was delighted to see "North American Indians" on my children's home school book list. For whatever reason, this was one of my favorite books when *I* was a kid.

Rather than being a trite, stereotypical book about Indians, as so many kids' books are, this one gives a good description of the historical tribes and their locales.
I do wish it touched a little on where those tribes are today and how they are faring, as far too many kids have no concept whatsoever about modern Indians. However, there's only so much that can be squeezed into a children's picture book. All in all, I think it's very well done.

I hope my own kids will enjoy it even half as much as I have.
