Book Description

September 1996
The WarbirdTech series is the first new, innovative look at military aircraft to arrive in the marketplace in the last fifteen years. Individual volumes in this series provide a first-ever "layman's technical" analysis and review of the world's most exciting combat aircraft. Included are photos, drawings and excerpts from previously "secret" and "restricted" technical manuals produced by the government and the aircraft manufacturers. Included are vintage photos of aircraft during prototype and manufacturing stages, exploded views, cutaways and phantom drawings form tech manuals, disassembled aircraft, rare variants and experimental models etc. Special emphasis is placed on the unique and ground-breaking design and performance aspects of each aircraft.

This series is for the enthusiast who has read all the combat stories, seen all the camouflage and markings books and now wants to learn the fascinating technical details behind the design and performance of combat aircraft.

4.0 out of 5 stars Capable Book on P-51 Mustang, February 11, 2011

This review is from: North American P-51 Mustang - Warbird Tech Vol. 5 (Paperback)
Published in 1996, this book went for $17.00 - as such, it was a compromise of the larger, more comprehensive books and smaller works such as In Action. War Bird Tech series provide a bit more narrative on the subject, in this case the P-51 from its birth to end of the line and survivors on in the Air Races.

32 pages cover the first prototypes to the P-51H version. 26 pages cover the Mustang in service, 2 pages of color photos, there is a section of the Korean War and a few pages on the twin Mustang, the P-82. The best part about this book are the 3-D line art taken from parts manuals, pilots manuals that show such details as the gun sight, bomb shackles, machine gun feed chutes.

Not a great book for the modeler, the photos are a bit grainy, the color photos not large enough to be of a huge help. The 2 pages of b&w line drawings of paint schemes are for RAF planes only. This is a book for beginners of aviation history, those who want an overview of the classic Mustang that helped win the air war against the Luftwaffe. For pricier options, P-51 Mustang: Development of the Long-Range Escort Fighter by Paul Ludwig was a very interesting read.
