This review is from: North Carolina As a Civil War Battleground 1861-1865 (Paperback)
A few years after publishing "The Civil War in North Carolina," John Gilchrist Barrett prepared a much condensed version (about 100 pages versus roughly 500 for the larger book) for publication by the North Carolina Division of Archives and History. "North Carolina as a Civil War Battleground, 1861-1865" hits the high points covered in the larger work, and contains a larger number of Civil War-era illustrations. It's a good beginning for the casual reader, but those strongly interested in the war in North Carolina should go to Barrett's full-length book, or start with William R. Trotters's three-volume series on the Civil War in North Carolina's coastal, Piedmont, and mountain regions.
