This review is from: North Carolina Schooners 1815-1911: A History of Shipping, Civil War Confiscations, Archaeological Sites, and the S. R. Fowle and Son Company of Washington, NC (Maritime Heritage Minnesota Titles) (Kindle Edition)
I bought this book for my father, who likes to read books about maritime history. I browsed through it, and it captured my interest straightaway. I ended up reading it all, and I was amazed at how well I could understand everything, being no maritime expert myself ! I also loved the author's writing style, and how she successfully presents a scientific study in a way that makes her book a very enjoyable reading for non experts. Still, this is a very well researched book, and one need only look at its many lists, graphs, and tables to understand the amount of hard work collecting the material and writing this must have involved. The book is illustrated throughout with beautiful black and white old photos, as well as very skillfully drawn sketches that really help non experts to further understand what the author is talking about. Besides the unexpected enjoyment I felt reading this book, I also learned a lot of things I really didn't know. I am sure that maritime history experts will be able to appreciate this book even more than I did, but from the non expert's point of view, this is definitely a book for anyone interested in maritime history. Highly recommended !
