The Rankin Family is a little known group from Cape Breton. Their music is excellent for celtic music. This album includes North Country, Lisa Brown, the hilarious Mull River Shuffle, and Rise Again which had lots of radio play in the early 1990's. It is definantly a cd must have for every Canadian.

The Rankin Family is the obvious choice for pure celtic music unadulterated by commercial input. If you love celtic fiddling and guitar, it is here as well!

This CD is very important in my life since many years. Beautiful songs that make me feel warm and happy. When I am a bit down I listen to it and I feel better. The 3 sisters have beautiful clear voices and the 2 brothers have rhythm and dynamism. The mixture of tranquil and joyful songs is very nice. And the fact that it is the work of a family getting along well is very important for me too....

I found this album at a thrift store and figured ,"What the heck? It's only a couple bucks, may as well try it." I was more than surprised and delighted. Had I known the album beforehand I would have been willing to pay full price. The Rankins have an impressive range of styles with a lot of celtic influence; the gaelic tracks are hauntingly beautiful and serene. The vocal harmony throughout is flawless. My only complaint is that the tracks entitled "Fisherman's Son" and "Tramp Miner" are a bit over the top (in a John Denver's "Thank God I'm A Country Boy" kinda way). I got the feeling that these two songs were hastily written space-filler ballads, very hard to take seriously. Regardless, this album is within the top 5 most listened to out of my collection of 1,000+.
