A Mad Pianist And Inventive Lyricist,
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: From North Dallas to the East Side (Reis) (Audio CD)
"Whistling" Alex Moore was a mad pianist and an extremely inventive lyricist. His piano playing is much more irregular and fun than that of Memphis Slim. Though he doesn't project his voice as well as Slim or Sykes, he comes up with all sorts of off-the-wall lyrics that have never been uttered by other Bluesmen. Though this man's musical career stretched almost the entire 20th century, he only recorded his wonderful music sporadically. This is one of the best Arhoolie discs I've had the pleasure of listening to. It is also 77 minutes of music, and available for a cheap price on Amazon. I cannot recommend this disc enough. If you own this disc, some vintage Jack Dupree, the best of Memphis Slim, and just about any of Sykes's music, you'll be able to get a great idea of the spectrum of Blues Piano. Fats Waller, Jelly Roll Morton and early Art Tatum are recommended for those who are also interested in Jazz Piano.
