Great photo backpack!, August 24, 2008
This review is from: The North Face Recon Backpack (Apparel)
When I go out for a shoot on foot or bicycle, I want to travel light. For that, there's no better daypack than the North Face Recon.
Can you believe this 18 ounce pack can carry a Gitzo G1325 tripod, a Linhof TechniKardan 4X5, 4 lenses, two boxes of quickload film, a 1 liter water bottle, a jacket, and the other stuff needed to shoot 4X5? Amazing. It's the best damn pack I've ever found. (Newer versions of this pack have more padding and weigh closer to 28 oz). No, it's not for checking as luggage, but it works great in a luggage bin. My personal man purse, December 18, 2009
This review is from: The North Face Recon Backpack (Apparel)
I have this backpack in black, and I joke that it has become my man purse. I take it everywhere with me. When traveling for work, it is my briefcase. When going out with the family, I throw supplies in there for the kids, as well as my camera. When going on day hikes, it has my supplies. It has not let me down.
I have tried dozens of laptop cases over the years, and this backpack has become my favorite laptop case. I have a 15" MacBook Pro, and it just barely fits (it does fit very nicely) in the laptop sleeve, so I don't see any larger laptop working in this backpack (but the 15" MacBook Pro is a bit large).
The backpack is not technically waterproof, and I doubt that it is even water resistant, but it has worked well for me even in hard rain. Don't count on this, as the zippers are of course exposed, but I have never noticed any contents inside getting wet.
There may be better backpacks, but this one seemed to me to be the best overall value, considering price, features, durability, and quality.
I highly recommend this man purse.

Not cheap, but nearly indestructible, August 19, 2010
This review is from: The North Face Recon Backpack (Apparel)
This is my briefcase. I use it every day and lug it everywhere. I've had it for 3 years, and there is absolutely no sign of wear and tear. This backpack is a true workhorse designed for a day-trip/hike, a quick overnight trip, a trip to the zoo with the kids, or a briefcase alternative for work. That's how I use it. I've got my laptop (plenty of space for laptops up to 17"), all necessary peripherals, notebooks, cell phones, anything for work, you name it. I've had this backpack for 3 years and none of the wear and tear from my previous backpack (Sierra) appear on this one. The shoulder pads and back of this backpack are extremely well-padded and have not collapsed like the padding on other backpacks would have under similar use. It's a comfortable and well-built backpack and you cannot go wrong getting one.
