More About the Author

Actor, artist, and author Rick Lenz is a jack of all trades in show business. As an actor, Lenz hamboned his way to the headlines in New York and Hollywood, eventually acting alongside many of the biggest names on stage and on screen. His prismatic role-playing parlayed over to the pen and spawned a successful string of plays from Off-Broadway to Hollywood playhouses to PBS. In 2012, Lenz broke the fourth wall with his audience and published an unprecedented, award-winning memoir, North of Hollywood, a gentle and irreverent Hollywood tale that critics have given a "standing ovation." The Alexandrite, his recent bold noir of Marilyn Monroe and time travel, is creating new headlines; Kirkus Reviews called this genre-bender a "mesmerizing story." When Lenz is not riding away on his next kaleidoscopic quest, he can be found painting, playing piano, or reading with his wife, Linda.

Rick Lenz, more well-known as Richard Lenz, the Hollywood leading man opposite Goldie Hawn in Cactus Flower, has written a memoir that is full of insight about the roll-coaster life as a star and working actor for decades in Hollywood. It's written without verbosity or viciousness.

In a refreshing turnabout from most first-person accounts out of tinseltown, the heroine of this story is Linda, Rick's spectacularly beautiful and classy wife of many years.

Yes, the big names and unknown stories in which they play a leading roll are in here: Al Pacino, Lucille Ball, Eva Gardner, James Caan, and many others. Glimpses

Mr. Lenz writes with a warmth and understanding of self that makes it a pleasure to read through what was happening, what he was thinking and in a voice that has learned a great many lessons.

Must-read for movie fans, anybody thinking about going into that crazy business and moving to California, or those of us who appreciate a story well-written.

I was so excited to read Rick's first book, as I knew I had seen him on a few classic tv episodes played on Nick-at-Nite when I was growing up, and knew he had worked with some of the biggest names in the business. I love to get the inside-scoop on the Hollywood scene from someone who has lived it. Rick is so genuine and warm in his delivery and I absolutely LOVED reading up on (particularly) Lucille Ball (I do, love Lucy :))... You will love this book - especially if you have any connections to broadway, television or the silver screen.

Wow! So unlike anything I've ever read. This unique look at life in Hollywood is a must read! Not only do you get to hear some stories of celebrities (I personally love Lucille Ball so it was cool to "see" her in this), but you really get insight into an actor's life, with his family and career.

BOOK REVIEW # 27 "North Of Hollywood" By Rick Lenz

Most books of this type generally take a look at things from the eye of the public looking in. The most interesting aspect of this book is the contact and conversations that author Rick Lenz has had with some of the most famous and legendary names in Hollywood history - are from the perspective of looking from the inside - looking out.

This actor turned (now writer) was born in 1939 in Springfield, Illinois and ever since he was a little boy he seemed to enjoy being on stage, TV and screen. Throughout his career he has made appearances in classics like Gene Sacks, Cactus Flower to a reoccurring roles on TV's Green Acres - as well as - appearing on shows like Home Improvement, Baywatch and The Practice - he has crossed paths with famous and near famous and the not-so famous.

He talks as if the conversations with Goldie Hawn, Richard Dreyfuss, Jill Clayburgh, Lilly Tomlin, Al Pacino, Jonathan Demme and more - like the perspective is from either having crossed paths for roles in the same project, working on set in the same project or conversing on the technical aspects of refining his craft of acting and the business overall.

Not just another `name-dropping' book. For example - he gives a little more than average attention and affection to Goldie Hawn - for very good reasons. It's always refreshing to hear some down-to-earth stories of famous people.

Although I think he was attempting to be a Memoir-like book - it reads much more like a diary. He seems to be taking things from his memory and clips or `snippets' of his life and formalizing them into independent thoughts and interests as time goes by for him.

Rick Lenz is a talented actor, writer and artist. He is also a gifted storyteller as evidenced by his memoir, North of Hollywood. I began reading this book expecting to possibly read juicy, tell-all stories about Hollywood insiders. Instead, I found mostly warm-hearted, respectful anecdotes of famous and not so famous Hollywoodites. But more than that, there were revealed many painful experiences of Lenz' dysfunctional family of origin, his struggles with alcohol, his gut-wrenching stories of his daughter's and his sister's addictions, the ups and downs of his career and his many years of therapy which have ultimately found him in a long, loving third marriage to his lovely Linda and close relationships with all three of his children (including the now sober Abigail). Lenz attacks all of his demons with brutal honesty and wicked humor.

Rick Lenz' story reveals the heart breaking and exhilarating roller coaster that most artists of any field must bump along to achieve some measure of success. He has certainly achieved success in all the important areas of his life after many years of paying his dues.

"North of Hollywood" is flat-out the most entertaining book I ever read about an actor's life. And I've read a lot of those.
Rick Lenz is not only a fine actor, he's a superb storyteller. "North of Hollywood" contains plenty of inside Tinsel Town anecdotes, but more than that, you learn what it's really like for a family man to balance a personal life with the life of a working actor.
Lenz writes with guileless honesty and wit. His story is touching, heartbreaking and laugh-out-loud funny. It's the rarest of all things for an auto-biography: a page-turner.
The array of stars he has known is extraordinary. If you've ever had any interest at all in what a working actor's life is really like, you'll love "North of Hollywood." The depth of insight into the craft of acting and the art of living make this book a must-read.
