4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Boston Roots Rock, October 21, 2005

This review is from: North By Northeast - Roots, Rock & Country (Audio CD)
This 1991 compilation from Northeastern Records is an excellent sampler of (mostly) Boston-area roots rock bands, although that label may be a little too confining. Everything from traditional Appalachian and Cajun tunes to Iggy Pop is tackled, usually with surprisingly good results. There's Shadows-meets-Morricone instrumental rock, and one track that sounds like the B-52's moved their love shack to zydeco country. But the Blood Oranges' version of "High On A Mountain Top" is a notch above anything else on the disc. The Ola Belle Reed classic has been recorded many times, but it's given new life here. All in all, a very worthwhile collection. Highly recommended.
