5.0 out of 5 stars a new favorite
I decided to read this book after completing my Jane Austen marathon. I received the movie with Richard Armitage as a holiday gift and was inspired to look to Elizabeth Gaskell for future reading. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Because I haven't read other editions I cannot speak for this particular version comparing to other prints but as for the story...

1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible edition of a wonderful book
Like another reader, I was inspired to read the book after watching the film version. The book itself is wonderful: it's an interesting story with fully realized characters and detailed descriptions.

However, this particular edition is quite possibly the worst edition of a book I've seen in print. There were dozens, if not hundreds, of typos in this edition. I...

I decided to read this book after completing my Jane Austen marathon. I received the movie with Richard Armitage as a holiday gift and was inspired to look to Elizabeth Gaskell for future reading. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Because I haven't read other editions I cannot speak for this particular version comparing to other prints but as for the story itself....Elizabeth Gaskell does not disappoint. Her content dares to delve deep into issues of the working class and barriers between social circles of the time. This book is right next to Pride and Prejudice in my heart....and had I discovered it sooner...Austen would not have been my favorite for so long!

1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible edition of a wonderful book, February 9, 2012
This review is from: North and South (Hardcover)
Like another reader, I was inspired to read the book after watching the film version. The book itself is wonderful: it's an interesting story with fully realized characters and detailed descriptions.

However, this particular edition is quite possibly the worst edition of a book I've seen in print. There were dozens, if not hundreds, of typos in this edition. I think it is safe to say that this edition was never edited (and, as a professional editor, I speak from some experience). There were so many typos that I had a difficult time following dialogue or even following the story sometimes.

It looked as though the book had been scanned in, and then never edited for errors that were introduced by the scan. It really was atrocious.

I did enjoy the novel, but I am disappointed in this hard cover edition. I plan to chuck this edition and find one that the publisher bothered to edit before they sent it to the printer.

Buy this novel, by all means, but think twice about buying this edition!
