I cannot recommend this book highly enough. I bought it in 1982 when I was flying F4s and stationed at Kaneohe Marine Corps Air Station in Hawaii. I was lucky enough to attend a evening star talk at the Bishop Museum with the author and bought it on the spot. For the last 30 years, this book has been my companion all around the world. I have sailed from Maryland to Malaysia and the easy to use star charts have helped me identify constellations and stars across the heavens (and across the globe.)
The book is very user friendly. It contains much useful, but light information on astronomy, some background on the constellations and also a bit of history of the study of the sky across the cultures of the world. My wife and I have homeschooled out children and this book has been an enjoyable and valuable resource.
There are useful maps of the night sky for each month along with a highlighted paragraphs of a couple constellations with which you can become familiar.
I have several astronomy guides and books and this small guide is always my first choice both when I am home looking from my back yard and when I am a thousand miles off shore identifying a southern hemisphere constellation, or getting ready for my evening star shots.
Cordially,
Joe Rooney
