5.0 out of 5 stars Good as Pet Gate
When it comes to using this for your children you'd have to first know what your needs are. I can't imagine it stopping any determined child without some reinforcing; it would be more like a psychological barrier. But depending on their temperament and age it may be good to deter them from getting to things they shouldn't have.
I ordered this to use for my puppy...

Who ever designed this gate has no clue what to expect from a 1 year old child. This gate is all look and no function. It looks great when you install it but had no strenght to resist a 13 month old child from pushing it in the middle and almost breaking it. If you plan on buying this gate be prepared to do a little bit of drilling and bolting to make it work. I was finally able to use the thing only after I bought four #8-32 x 1 3/4" long screws with matching washers and nuts and bolted the middle of the gate together. I did this by unscrewing the original connection at the middle of the gate and overlapped the pieces together about 6" then drilling two holes about 4" apart on the top and bottom rails and bolting together. It works! But it's not what someone should have to do after spending thie price for something. Good luck!!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Not strong or safe!, January 24, 2005
This review is from: North States Supergate Extra Wide Swing Gate (Baby Product)
I recently purchased this gate, as I needed a gate for a space that is 93 inches wide. I was so happy when I found this, and for the price! Well, I installed it with no problem at all. But it is not secure. It actually bends forward and backward with barely any pressure and when my daughter leaned against it, the wooden dowels that hold the bars together actually started to break. AWFUL and very unsafe!!! Target.com was very helpful in sending UPS to pick it up.

1.0 out of 5 stars Too Flimsy, February 4, 2005

I recently purchased this gate for an opening in my home that is 68 inches wide. Within one week of use, the wood splintered apart in the center rendering it completely unusable. I am returning the gate and puchasing the more expensive metal type. This gate is a perfect example of getting what you pay for.

I ordered this to use for my puppy. In my case I don't have the problem of her pushing on it so I can't say how long it would last through that. For this price I was quite happy with the quality and it was amazingly simply to install.

4.0 out of 5 stars It works ok, November 23, 2008
This review is from: North States Supergate Extra Wide Swing Gate (Baby Product)
This item is great for my dogs, even though its not very high you can adjust it to sit higher depending how high you mount it. My dog LOVES to chew onit, probably not the best thing. The one thing I HATED was the I hooks that are included are WAAY to short, they barely make it through drywall. I had to run to lowes and get replacements after the first ones ripped out of the wall.

4.0 out of 5 stars Does what is advertises, but not a great design, November 2, 2009

We bought this to span a wide area in our entry way which was the only way to block the stairs in our house. It is basically a run of the mill wooden stair gate on steroids.

Pros:
- Does its job. It can span a very wide opening and when it is attached it is secure. (be sure to check the minimum opening size as it is still pretty wide at its smallest setting)
- Can retract/swing to allow people to walk through.

Neutral:
- requires installing i-screws into studs or other substantial materials. I don't think there is a better way to do this as a pressure gate would not be very secure.

Cons:
- the description says it "swings". I was expecting some kind of door in them middle, but really you just unlatch one of the sides and the whole thing pivots side that is still attached. Not elegant, but it works.
- It is not easy to attach and remove from the iscrews. I find myself stepping over it to avoid having to "swing" the gate open.
- Even when installed the gate is "rattley". It is not going to come apart, but it does not have a solid feel to it.

Not a joy to use, but I couldn't find anything else that would do the job so I guess I can't complain too much.

4.0 out of 5 stars Simple but good baby gate!, July 26, 2008
This review is from: North States Supergate Extra Wide Swing Gate (Baby Product)
Simple design baby gate that serves its purpose. I do recommend using more sturdy hooks with anchors for the wall if you plan to swing the gate open often or your little one shakes on the gate. Nice product that is lightweight and could easily be stained or painted if needed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Large Wideswing Gate for animals or kids, May 16, 2011

This is a super light weight sliding gate. I didn't like the nuetral tone, so I stained it with dark mahogony stain to match my surrounding furniture. It was easy to do and it really enhanced the gate. I just rubbed it on with a rag and let it dry. The gate is easy to set up. You really don't even need any tools. It keeps my dogs out of my living room and its low enough for my kids to just step over, though its easy to latch. It easily covers a six foot opening and could go several feet more if needed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Had for two years and it's still holding up., May 6, 2011
This review is from: North States Supergate Extra Wide Swing Gate (Baby Product)
We've had this little gate for two years now and it's still doing fine. We wanted a gate that would work for odd entrances and something that wouldn't break the bank and this fit the bill. It has come off the runners a few times and it may need tightening up every few months but it's easy to fix right back up. To make it even easier on yourself, bigger eye screws than what come with the gate are a good idea. Having to pinch the ends to get them to fit into the little eye screws that come with it just outright sucks and it'll hurt your fingers. Also we step over it a lot in place of undoing it. It's so tall though that we tend to whack it with our feet/knees 10% of the time (I'm 5'6" and he's 5'11") and it hurts! Just some extra caution is good :) I plan on buying another one of these when this one craps out as we're expecting again.

With any kind of child gate, the thing to keep in mind is that no matter the quality/brand, your young one shouldn't be allowed to blatantly abuse the gate. It's not a baby-sitter; it just sets a boundary. I'm sure if we'd allowed our 2 1/2 year old to shake it all the time it would be broken up into pieces.

1.0 out of 5 stars Pain in Neck, July 27, 2009
This review is from: North States Supergate Extra Wide Swing Gate (Baby Product)
This gate is super flimsy, and the anchors are a joke. The anchors are 4 eyehooks that screw into the wall; 2 on each side. The bottom hooks are just hooks, and the top has a tight spring-loaded latch. The trick is to get the bottom and top hooks on at the same time, and when they are separated by 19", it is not so easy. I do not think that this will stand up to a toddler trying to pull up on it, and definitely not to one that may ram it with a walker. All in all, I should have tried to figure out a better way to span the large 74" gap that we have versus using this gate... but since I have already bought it, I am going to continue to use it until it breaks, or the hooks get ripped from the wall.
