Excellent book on wildlife, wildflowers, plants and trees.,
By A Customer
This review is from: Reader's Digest North American Wildlife (Hardcover)
This is the best resource book I have found on the subject matter. All illustrations are done beautifully in color. The following are a few of the specific identification aids used: check marks for physical feature identifiers, symbols identifing habitat, maps displaying geographic location. The book is indexed by common and scientific names, is compact, easy to handle, an excellent reference tool and is good for leisure reading

If I could only keep one field guide with me, this would be IT....,

My dad would occasionally bring me a book or two, saying "Kathy, I think you would enjoy this." He's been gone for 21 years now, and I have had to reglue sections of pages back onto the spine with PVA glue, but this little book remains the most valuable of all my huge collection of field guides. It has so many entries, and indexed by both common and scientific names; most importantly, the listings for each grouping are organized in a logical way, clustering similar species together so that you can easily find what you are looking for. One of my big gripes about some otherwise-helpful field guides is that there seems to be so little logic in their organization. This one is my favorite because it's not exhaustingly bulky. but so well-researched, that most of what you are likely to come across in your field wanderings will be found here - or you will at least have clues to locating it in a more detailed field guide in your library. They have illustrations of 34 native orchids, again, not comprehensive, but such a good representative sampling of the most-frequently found, and so well and carefully illustrated, that, again, I can give my full recommendation for this fine book. Thanks, Dad! : )

This review is from: Reader's Digest North American Wildlife (Hardcover)
This book has the best fact-filled text and color portraits of any I have read. It includes over 2,000 plants and animals of all types. It is easy to read and research because each section is color tabed. If you wont to exolore Wildlife you need this Book!!

Great reference,
This review is from: North American Wildlife (Paperback)
I received this book from my mother. A few years ago I was visited by a Sharp Shinned Hawk which landed on my front porch near dusk one evening. I was not sure what kind of hawk it was, so I looked in my newest bird identification book which listed all known hawks, but was not sure I had identified it appropriately until I looked in my oldest reference, "North American Wildlife", which had the exact picture and description. This is a great book for the wildlife enthusiast as it contains numerous forms of plant and animal information.

An Invaluable Resource,
This review is from: North American Wildlife (Paperback)
I received this book from my Mom in 1984, and in the arrogance of youth, assumed it would be simplistic or inferior (it was from Reader's Digest- gasp!). However, she had done her homework- The guide was well-illustrated, informative, and balanced in its presentation. It provided basic information that taught you to ID flora and fauna, showed geographic ranges, wildlife tracks/prints, and other bits of info that piqued your interest enough to encourage more in-depth research with other sources. It's still the first book I grab when I encounter a new item- a fox-like creature in the headlights, a tree or a wildflower I've never seen before- Would be a great resource for kids or older folks, nature lovers or book lovers in general- It's well-done.

We own a lot of field guides, but this recently purchased book covers a great many species that we couldn't identify in those guides, and also gives little tidbits of interesting facts about each one. Great illustrations as well

I was given this book (slightly different cover, mine is a green on green with a gold imprint of a squirrel) back when I was 4 or 5 (I was born in 1976). When my family moved to Kentucky, I used this book constantly to learn what every plant, animal and tree was that I seen. My book, unfortunately, was so well used, that there are pages falling out. I will be buying a used copy so I can put away my old book and use the newer book. It's really the perfect little guide.

Wonderful Reference Work,

I bought this book when it first came out, probably from a book club. I've used it steadily for almost 30 years, and I've never been disappointed. If I want to see what an animal or plant looks like, I find it in the index, then go to the page it's on and read about it. Or, I find the photo of an animal I want to know about, then read about it. Ditto for plants, though I tend to use this book mostly for animals and rely on plant guides for plants. I've never purchased the updated version of this book because I find this 1982 edition an excellent reference work.

Definitely one to grace your shelves...,
This review is from: Reader's Digest North American Wildlife (Hardcover)
My grandparents bought this for me as a 3 year old child. Thirty years later, I can tell you that this book was THE definitive book in helping to nurture my love for the outdoors. In fact, I now have two copies. I still have my 30 year old book, with the reptile and insect sections falling out. I bought a new one for my own kids to use and enjoy. The illustrations are well done and make for easy identification of both flora and fauna. It gives you just enough description and information for each entry. Makes you want to find out more! Wonderful book for everyone and I'd recommend it to anyone with children! |
