2.0 out of 5 stars Look Before Buying, September 8, 2006

I was very disappointed in this book. While it is not a "bad" knitting book, the patterns here are mostly very simple/basic and not very original. The book might appeal to the beginning knitter who does not have a pattern library, but there is not much here that would appeal to a more advanced knitter. Most of the sweaters are done in bulky and very bulky wools, making them unsuitable for a more temporate climate or for wearing indoors. If I had had a chance to leaf through this book before purchasing it, I would not have bought it.

2.0 out of 5 stars A few good patterns, January 28, 2007

I was excited to get this book because I had heard so much about author's sweaters for the movie Cider House Rules. Unfortunately, there are only a couple of patterns I would actually make. The other patterns remind me of the town where the book was written (I went to college in the next town over) - Northampton is great, but not the most fashion-forward place! Most have very boxy shapes and some also use a simple placement of cables or other stitch patterns. So, if you are looking for sturdy sweaters made with natural yarns, this might be a good book for you. If, on the other hand, you are looking for fashionable sweaters that are _not_ two sizes too big for you, I would skip this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK!!!, September 19, 2006

Based on the other review I wouldn't have purchased this book; but lucky for me I ignored the other review and bought away. This is a simple, easy to follow book filled with useful knitting patterns. Will they bring world peace? No. But that is not what I bought it for. For pete's sake - buy this book; you won't be sorry. Opened the box 1 hour ago and I've already retrieved yarn for the two-color hat, bulky baby sweater and the mitered blanket. What more could you want. Thanks from a very experienced knitter of 40 years.
