Editorial Reviews

In 1982 Steve Wynn broke onto the music scene with The Dream Syndicate and their classic album The Days of Wine and Roses. In 2009, he and his current band of gunslingers the Miracle 3 rolled into Richmond, VA to record their first new album together in more than five years. Upon their arrival, pal and band mate Stephen McCarthy jokingly warned him to ''leave your northern aggression at the door.'' The phrase that became the ensuing album's title seemed all too apropos. Northern Aggression is psychedelic, greasy, sneaky, manic, wise, seasoned, nervous and ragged in all the right places. But this was no civil war, no bloody battle, no historical reenactment. No, this was Wynn and the Miracle 3 doing what they do best-colliding against each other and their surroundings, not holding back and barely taking stock until all was done.

It's so refreshing when you can get a 50 year old rocker, that plays with enthusiasm like Steve Wynn. The Dream Syndicate leader has been on his own now for 20 years, and he still keeps cranking out top notch rock 'n roll, when most people at his age go into a shell and really don't put out there best work anymore. Steve and the Miracle 3 come out blazing on "Northern Aggression" with "Resolution", what a great fuzz, psych track, love the bass by Dave DeCastro. The jangle-rock of "We Don't Talk About It", this is another top track. "No One Ever Drowns", a psycheldelic piece, keyboards that sound like strings (have a few brews and this songs starts sounding very wierd).
Steve pulls out the soulful sounds of "Consider The Source", some good lead guitar by Jason Victor and hammond organ by Steve Bassett. "Colored Lights", a hypnotic-rocker, Steve puts out great lyrics, some wild guitar passages on this track. Oh the sound on their take of the drug indused ballad "The Death Of Donny B.", the band sounds so good, has that late 60's early 70's sound, Linda on drums and the strumming of Jason, the band should get airplay for this song (but it won't), sad shape of the music industry overall. "The Other Side", is a strong jangly-rocker. The pedal steel of Stephen McCarthy (Long Ryders) adds presence to "Cloud Splitter", a beautiful musical piece. A guy who's lost touch with himself at "St. Millwood", Stephen helps out here too. The band turns it up with AGGRESSION for "On The Mend", Steve can do these type of songs in his sleep I think, just a great fast rocker. They close the album with "Ribbons And Chains", some good lap steel by Stephen, kind of a Bob Dylan type song, Linda helps sing back up with Steve here.

Wow. I saw Steve and the band at SXSW. Maybe the best set out of 48 that I saw this year. Mostly playing tracks off of this album. I bought Northern Aggression and it hasn't left my car stereo since. Highly, highly recommended.

I'm a big fan of Mr. Wynn's work going back to the Dream Syndicate days, and while I don't care for Danny and Dusty too much, and hate baseball and so don't relate to The Baseball Project very well (altho' the music and performances are great), I *love* the Miracle 3 stuff. As matter of fact, *Tick, Tick, Tick ...* has been in pretty much monthly or weekly (it varies) rotation since it came out, and I put the live DVD on pretty often, also. (I am also a big fan of his "Solo" stuff, of course; why *Dragon Bridge* wasn't on everyone's Top 10 list, I'll never know - look for the amazing online concert -, and I confess that DS and Gutterball are some of my fave groups.)
*Norther Aggression* is a worthy successor cto *Tick ...*, if a little more raw in production. I love the live feel of it, the guitars and rhythm section are hot, I and note "Colored Lights" is yet another terrific "signature" song. "Death of Donny B" is both amusing and disturbing, and "We Don't Talk About It", "Consider the Source" and "No One Ever Drowns" out-rock about everything I've heard this year. The performance are garagey, spontaneous and energetic. Even the ballads, good as they are and they totally are, sound kinda like they are a respite between rockers.
I gave a copy of this to a friend visiting from London earlier this year and he's never commented on it; I kinda think he didn't really understand it, and that's alright.
This record is also on my monthly or weekly (depends) rotation, and if you understand Wynn, or American garage-rock and psychedelic rock, and love literate lyrics and up-tempo jams, you'll agree with my Martini-scale of 4.5/5 olives.
