2.0 out of 5 stars No photographs!
If you are looking for guide that includes photos, you will be disappointed. If you are a novice looking for a visual guide to give you design ideas, this is not an appropriate book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Indispensable Guide for Northern CA gardeners, June 7, 2000

This review is from: Northern California Gardening: A Month-by-Month Guide (Paperback)
While there are many guides to Bay Area Gardening, those of us in Zone 14 (Sacramento) are usually busy trying to translate instructions for a dramatically different climate to our own gardening needs.

This book is an indispensable guide for ALL Northern Californians. Month-by-month the author tells us what all gardeners should be doing, then has specific recommendations for Central Valley, Mountain, and Coastal gardeners. Each month also includes great advice on pest control (she favors gentle methods), planting, pruning, and what is usually available at local nurseries.

This guide is especially good for people who are new to Northern CA, and are in garden shock. When I moved from Zone 4 to Zone 14 it was the first book I purchased and it was a real life saver (the plants's lives, that is!)

This book has helped me make the transition to gardening in the Central Valley. Besides being a new gardener, I'm also new to the Sacramento area. Northern California Gardening explains plant care clearly and includes a lot of recommendations for plants that thrive in the different NorCal micro-climates.

Because there's a limit to how much the book can cover, some subjects aren't explained as thoroughly as a beginner (like me) needs, but it provides me with a good starting point.

I love that the book is divided up by the different months of the year, specifying what tasks I need to consider during each month. It gets me excited about what gardening I will be doing in a few months' time.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-have for newbies to Northern California, February 4, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Northern California Gardening: A Month-by-Month Guide (Paperback)
I stumbled on this book at the library, and now I have to have my very own copy to keep at my bedside! People who have grown up gardening in Northern California might find Endicott's advice old hat, but for people like me -- a longtime gardener but new to this region -- or for longtime NoCal residents who are just now getting into gardening -- this is an excellent guide. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Read it every month, February 23, 2008

I've had this book a while and was curious why it didn't have a 5 star rating. If you live in Northern California this book is very informative and very well presented. It is the only garden reference I've read cover to cover, but that is due to its layout taking you through the season month by month. Yes, it does not have photos, but if you actually take the time and read you'll find it very informative and even discover information about drought tolerant plants.

5.0 out of 5 stars Using Grace's book for a decade I've become a great gardener, May 31, 2008
My go to book each month for over a decade now. It has consistently provided me monthly useful information and to do lists to grow fantastic gardens filled with flowers, fruits, and vegetables suitable for living in the bay area. I'm here to buy another copy for a friend. This book has worked for me from my beginning gardener stage, to my now very comfortable in growing by seed, cuttings, or transplants, hundreds of varieties of plants. Photos are readily available using online search engines, or better yet, seek out the plants in three dimensions at californias many gardening stores. I've taken lists of plants from this book with me to check out in person at nurseries which provided me first hand info no glossy photo could have. This book is fantastically useful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for beginners, March 15, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This book has been indispensable for learning how to garden. The best features are that it tells you what to do when and is specific to the region and climate. No glossy pictures is not a problem, just go to Internet for pictures (or other references). I've been able to successfully garden the first year I attempted and my husband thinks I have the best green thumb - Nope, just great help!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great reference, September 2, 2011
This is a fantastic reference book, and is a fine companion to Sunset for those of us living in NorCal. I would cut Katherine Grace Endicott's gardening articles out of the San Francisco Chronicle as a young girl, they were so informative and full of love for the regional flora. The only drawback I have found in this book, purely by accident, is the missing pages in the index covering Cs, Ds and Es (would be between pp 320-321). Bummer! I hope she fixes this in the next edition. Otherwise a classic.
