If you are a lover of quilts, old or new, you owe it to yourself to read Northern Comfort, a very thorough overview of early American quilters and their lovely works of folk art. The photos are wonderful, as are the real life stories about the women who labored with love to help their families keep warm in the days long before central heating. Lynne Bassett is an authority in the field of historic textiles, and is well respected as a researcher and writer. Keep this book close to hand for inspiration and just for the pleasure of browsing through it at your leisure.

I recently bought this book for my Mom, an avid quilting fanatic, and she absolutely loved it. She used words like "Magical" and "Wonderful"

I had the honor to work with Lynne when she curated the exhibit that this book is based on. These quilts, from the collection of Old Sturbridge Village(and a few other places) tell the story of women's work keeping their family warm. Many of these quilts are full of fabulous bits of fabric of every type--my all time favorite is on quilt that began as a small hex quilt that grew to grand proportions, that is full of fabrics from men's garments. The quilt that incorporate a lovely embroidered silk pocket is another beauty. This book is a must for anyone who wishes to know more about quilts and their evolution.
