4.0 out of 5 stars Creepy Campfire Tales, March 19, 2009

Lots of spoooky smorgasbord in this creepy collection. Even more fun if you are familiar with the Northeast. Great nighttime reading--- but not if you're alone in the house. Leave the lights on!

5.0 out of 5 stars These 100 fast-reading stories are amazing!, March 1, 2009
This review is from: Northern Haunts: 100 Terrifying New England Tales (Paperback)
Each spooky short tale has it's own memorable traits and this book in it's entirety is well worth purchasing. My daughter (who is 15) and I took turns reading this to each other before bed and had a lot of fun with it!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great collection of stories!, February 22, 2009

This review is from: Northern Haunts: 100 Terrifying New England Tales (Paperback)
I've read a few of the offerings from Shroud publishing since they opened up shop and this one does not disappoint.

This book is also the perfect travel reader, I picked this up last week prior to going on a trip, it was perfect for getting in some interesting reading and not needing to worry about investing a lot of time, its easy to pick back up wherever you leave off.

As if that wasn't enough reason to enjoy it, there's 100 horror filled stories packed into it with New England as the backdrop. There's plenty of history and lore from this area of the country and these stories tap into some of that, while others give you a new flavor of something even darker. I could go into some of my favorites but with 100 stories there's too many to mention here.

Reader Beware: Clearly some very talented writers contributed to this book, for those of you who enjoy New England as a vacation spot, let's just say that planning your next camping trip to the white mountains,a B&B along the scenic coastline of Maine, or even a quick stop into Salem, Mass to get a taste of local legend, this may have you thinking twice....

These are only scary stories for a campfire, aren't they?

5.0 out of 5 stars Very varied collection, February 16, 2009
This review is from: Northern Haunts: 100 Terrifying New England Tales (Paperback)
This is a quite interesting collection of tales spanning everything from witches to demons, serial killers and mutants. I have to say that variety is this collection's strength, you are bound to dislike some of the stories but it's also certain hat you will find at least ten or twenty stories you will fall in love with. They are all very short pieces, which can easily be read in five minutes, just perfect for a brief scare before you go to bed :). Oh and before I forget to mention it, the cover art and the choice of story distribution, fonts and what not, (the little details) make this stand out as a very, very nice anthology.

5.0 out of 5 stars An amazing selection!, January 23, 2009
This review is from: Northern Haunts: 100 Terrifying New England Tales (Paperback)
From the editor of Abominations: 17 Spine-tingling Tales of Murderous Monsters and Horrific Creatures and Beneath the Surface: 13+ Shocking Tales of Terror comes a collection of 100 short short stories of terror based in the highways and byways of New England! Shroud presented all of these stories in first person so that the reader could employ this book in telling ghost stories around the fire. While many of the stories are more traditional, others are a bit more unconventional. There are some terrific authors in this including Steve Vernon Haunted Harbours: Ghost Stories from Old Nova Scotia, and Stephen Mark Rainey: Other Gods, as well one of my personal favorites Nate Kenyon: The Reach (Leisure Fiction), and Bloodstone (Leisure Fiction). All-in-all this book, with 366 pages, is a great addition to your horror library!

Loved the book, especially the article by David Chrisom about a witch. Well done, wish he would finish with a novella to develop the story.
