Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

If you are looking for a real "taste of Italy" as well as a means of saving money, Baglivi's book will guide you to the trattoria (restaurants) where the natives eat. For each of the 12 regions, from Latium to Friuli-Venezia Giulia, are listed the name of the establishment, phone numbers, hours of operation, cost of a sample meal, and wheelchair accessibility. A brief sketch of the interior gives a feel for local color, while the menu choices of the author and her husband detail food specialties of the area. A bonus is a brief lesson in Italian dining phrases and pronunciations. Baglivi, who has won the Da Vinci Award for excellence in Italian language and culture, has produced a valuable guidebook that allows the tourist to sample dishes not ordinarily found on the tourist circuit. Review

Planning a trip to Italy? Don't leave home without this pocket-sized handbook on Italy's best eating spots. Dozens of trattorie in 12 Italian regions are described: all are small, inexpensive establishments which profile regional cuisine. -- Midwest Book Review

The approach to the description of each restaurant is a bit different than most guides who give a straightforward, to the point look, whereas Baglivi takes you on a journey. Writing in a first person conversational style, you feel like you are reading a quote from her diary. In writing about the Trattoria l'Cche Ce Ce in Florence, she describes her experience by saying, "Moments after our pasta arrives, the waiter places a chunk of parmigiano cheese on the table. I use it lavishly over my ravioli rose, delicate pasta pockets plum with ricotta cheese in a subtle tomato/cream sauce. Kevin (husband) waits patiently for his turn to grate the tangy cheese on his penne strascicate, short pasta tubes daringly painted with turnip tops, porcini mushrooms, and a dash of red pepper and garlic."I don't know about you, but I got hungry while reading her desciptions.--Reviewed by Kate Moore, a food and travel writer from Indianapolis, Indiana. -- Travel Books Review, Spring 1995

ÒThe bookÕs general premise is as sound as its specific eatery recommendations.Ó -- New York Daily News

I just returned from a 2-week trip to Italy, and this book pointed us to at least 6 unforgettable meals that we would have otherwise missed. A charming guide.

This review is from: Northern Italy: A Taste of Trattoria (Paperback)
I love this book, it's the best travel book to find where the locals go to eat. And, when you aren't traveling you can almost smell and feel the different trattorias by reading the vingettes about each one. I've given this book as gifts to several people traveling in Italy and they have all found it fun to follow the maps and find an out-of-the-way place with great food. Once in Venice the cook saw the book and was so happy he showed it to everyone in the place and gave us more of their house wine -- not something that happens on the normal tourist route.
