5.0 out of 5 stars Sibelius fans -- grab this CD NOW! December 2, 2008
Format:Audio CD
I ended up borrowing my mother's copy of this CD when I couldn't find one via Amazon or other vendors. It's a delightful compendium of little-known works by Nordic composers. I first heard one of the works broadcast on NPR's late-night classical program (Lars-Erik Larsson's Winter's Tale suite) and it grabbed me from the first few notes. I would note that I'm a big fan of works by Sibelius and also enjoy Grieg (notably his piano works and his lieder), but while both of these two composers are represented on this disc, it was with works that are lesser known.

To be fair -- none of these composers is a Mozart or new-era composer like Phillip Glass. There are few musical challenges here; all the works are orchestral, generally romantic and melodic in tone and conducted with that approach in mind. But it's a great way to discover a host of new composers who have produced work in the vein of Sibelius, and the disc itself is great to sit down with in front of a roaring fire on a cold day and listen to while drinking a glass of wine.
